JUDGES STAND By Charles Hatton Cassidys Suggestion to NARC Campbell High on Twilight Tear Calif Board Solving Dates Problems ProblemsBay Bay Meadows Wins Proud Citation NEW YORK N Y May 31 Marshall Cassidy has a fertility of ideas he has often exercised in a way that is beneficial to the thoroughbred sport Today he came up with a new one and it seems to us to have a good deal of merit In fact we think it war ¬ rants consideration in the NARC conference at Chicago It concerns racing colors There are a great many new owners today Cassidy began and many of them adapted their silks from those of prominent establish ¬ ments such as Belair Stud and Calumet Farm which have registered their racing livery as life colors with The Jockey Club This similarity is leading to no end of confusion for the public and a lot of un ¬ necessary red tape for the racing officials Many stables which have not registered their colors with The Jockey Club ship stakes candidates to New York It is often discovered that the blouse they have reg ¬ istered in the state from which they came is indistinguishable from that of some owner who has listed his colors with The Jockey Club This necessitates a last minute variation of the outofstate colors and a special dispensation to permit their use A number of owners have not reg ¬ istered their silks with The Jockey Club though it costs only 25 to record a set of life colors Instead they pay a state fee of 5 or so I am told that the confusion about racing silks is as prevalent elsewhere as it is here on Long Island The sums in ¬ volved are insignificant either way I do not suggest the states waive their fees any ¬ more than I suggest The Jockey Club waive its own But I do think that all colors should be registered with The Jockey Club to avoid repetition just as in the case of horses names namesJack Jack Campbell paid Warren Wrights classy Twilight Tear a nice compli ¬ ment in his Top Flight Handicap weights wherein he rated her supe ¬ rior to MarKell Askmenow and Stefanita on the scale It is a compliment Twilight Tear did not accept Probably she thought it an excess of flattery To be specific Campbell considers Twilight Tear three pounds superior to her stable mate MarKell four better than the retired Askmenow and five better than Stefanita StefanitaThe The ArlingtonWashington organizations are wise in designating the closing dates which they have for the 50000 Arlington Handicap on July 29 and the 50000 Washington Park Handicap September 4 The Arlington closes as late as July 15 and the other on August 19 This would seem to assure that these coveted fixtures will attract the latest developments in the handicap division The handicap class this year is unusually fragile and the Chi ¬ cago clubs are obviously allowing for breakage Earlier closing might find sev ¬ eral box office attractions among the absentees absenteesRacing Racing dates are the root of much evil that besets racing and they are the subject of debate in the councils of the California Racing Board these days Close on the heels of the re ¬ cent controversy that evolved on Hollywood and Meadows dates little Del Mar proposed to conflict with Jack MacKenzies elaborate Los Angeles course As the board went into its huddle in the matter it was indicated Del Mar might resume about the Fourth of July as it could be ready to function about that date The Meadows continues through June 17 with 10 War Relief days It is estimated the net proceeds from its Memorial Day card which were to be donated naval hospitals ap ¬ proximated 60000 The board has not made an illadvised maneuver thus far in its administration and Californians are assured first class racing at Hollywood Park much of it for War Relief ReliefPostscripts Postscripts Francis Dunne probably wilj not return to Hollywood Park as its racing secretaryhandicapper this summer but continue to serve as steward representing the New York Racing Commission BilJ Kyne is understandably proud of a cardt from a soldier in Persia wishing him good luck and complimenting him on a won derful job for War Relief Sirde whom many regard as a better colt than was Mioland has not been nominated for1 either the Classic or American Derby Many thought Twilight Tear went a shade sore in the Coaching Club Delaware Park probably will distribute more thais 100000 in War Bonds to successful horsey men at its young meeting Colonef Bradley the Derby winningest man is clubhouse regular at Belmont Park this spring
