San Diego WPB Officials Oppose Del Mar Meeting MeetingSpokesman Spokesman Says Though Issue Is For Action by State Authorities AuthoritiesSAN SAN DIEGO Calif June 7 Opposition to the opening of the Del Mar race track continued today among local War Produc ¬ tion Board officials John Young spokes ¬ man for the WPB stated the issue was one primarily for action by state authorities and that the federal commission preferred not to take action However he added that the track would be required to apply to the War Manpower Commission for a wage ceiling permit permitFollowing Following a meeting of local war agency officials Young told representatives of the press that he believed civic authorities of San Diego would oppose operation of the race track and added that it was his understanding the track officials would be willing to call off the meeting if they were assured doing so would not jeopardize their chances of obtaining licenses to operate in the future futureSan San Diego is in a tight spot because of its war effort and her industries should not be subjected to disturbances which the racing at Del Mar would bring Young concluded concludedLater Later in the day Willard F Tunney general manager of the Bing Crosby track stated that plans for the July 1 opening are well under way and that its sponsors had entertained no thought of cancelling the meeting meetingPeople People who prefer racing to other sports should not be denied the right to enjoy it Tunney said Racing will not adversely affect the war effort It will have the same beneficial effect that arises from baseball bowling golf tennis and the theater All are very necessary to the health and contentment of the people The heads of our federal government recognize this fact and have wisely refrained from favoring any one particular sport or enter ¬ tainment over another The government realizes all must continue because all people cannot obtain relaxation and recre ¬ ation from the same game or sport
