JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton Experts Agree on Man o War Mares Aug Belmonts Posthumous Honor Suggests NARC Endorse Mich Rule Ky Logical Place for HBPA Home HomeLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky June 8 At luncheon with Charley Kenney and Dr Charley Hagyard today the conversa ¬ tion somehow got around to broodmares and families We find this a subject of ab ¬ sorbing interest when it is discussed as these experts discuss it And they impart a certain integrity to their opin ¬ ions that is refreshing They also have a fine disregard for the time honored tradition which demands that ex ¬ perts disagree For in ¬ L stance they are agreed about the superior ¬ ity of the Man o War mares Kenney at resent has one of the most desirable of hese under his wing at Coldstream She is the photogenic Spotted Beauty an own sister of the illfated War Beauty who never raced He almost quoted verbatim our friend Harrie Scott who has charge of some 50 daughters of the super horse when le observed Man o War sires the finest type of broodmares Dr Hagyard supple ¬ mented this accolade by recalling that he recently was asked to name what he con ¬ siders the 20 leading broodmare prospects n the Blue Grass He began by naming Crispin Oglebays lovely Level Best who is a daughter of the celebrated Man o Wai mare Speed Boat and the latters superb rearling sister Oglebay this spring re iected 30000 for Level Best who now has a saucy filly foal by Sir Gallahad HE The offer was made by the Great Magoo of the bloodstock market Incidentally one of he favorite sports of the countrysides armchair element is a speculation on the sum Speed Boats yearling sister would fetch were Red Jerry Riddle to offer her at auction It is not fanciful to think that this would exceed the 50500 realized for War Feathers in the Golden Twenties TwentiesListening Listening to this ode to the Man o War mares we were reminded of You and Hereditys conclusion that the sires influence is usually more pronounced in his fillies than in his colts Perhaps that explains why Big Red is worldfamed as a broodmare sire There is some doubt that he will establish an enduring male line Certainly such of his daughters as Speed Boat Regal Lily Army Flirt Fairy Day Spotted Beauty and Furlough have more of his physical characteristics than has any of his sons sonsAs As countless thousands who have made the pilgrimage to Faraway know Man p War is a horse of distinctive and heroic proportions His outsize stifle short can ¬ ons and oblique shoulder are a grouping of faculties that is a predisposition to speed and more speed His daughters inherit these architectural attributes in greater degree than his sons But no nick has been discovered to improve on the original On the contrary each succeed ¬ ing generation marks a farther compro ¬ mise It is a posthumous distinction for August Belmont that he bequeathed breed ¬ ers a horse who improved the breed and one upon whom they could not improve We now know that mares who are agents of the blood of Fairy Gold and Rpi Herode are peculiarly suited to him as his progeny from such mares carry his own stamp Unfortunately this fecility was recognized about a decade too late Michigan has taken the initiative and adopted the apprentice rule sug ¬ gested here last winter We hope the NARC will endorse it on a na ¬ tionwide basis so that it may be more effective in encouraging the development of jockeys It is grati ¬ fying also that the HBPA is consid ¬ ering the Blue Grass as the locale of its proposed home for veteran horsemen We shall not fatigue you by quoting the truism Racingr takes care of its own and reciting its benefactions We think the bene ficiaries of the HBPAs program would prefer Kentucky where they may board horses till the soil and be almost if riot quite selfsupport ¬ ingMiscellany ing Miscellany After beginning with such a preponderance of filly foals the spring crop leveled off at about 48 per cent colt Boojum sired just three foals in 4s but these include the winners Burgel Arab and Future Hero Pericles now has quartercracks it is said Detroif racegoers are of the dilettante kind who rarely visit the paddock and identif horses by their saddlecloth numbers oftener than by their names Burlejf Parke may be conditioning still anothe Futurity winner in Errard George Strata likes him Suffolks track vet is show ing a commendable interest in lame hprsef Spiral Pass and Farmerette are 1001 companions in Coldstreams broodmar paddocks
