REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstarr DunstarrA A Visit to North Wales Stud Why Hyperionion Is Now a Sire Bahram Greatly Improved Stud Only Three to Be Sold in August AugustWARRENTON WARRENTON Va June 16 The breeding world like that of racing has its unusual happenings of 1944 Sel ¬ dom do we see a stallion who never set foot in this country leading our stallion list but that is the case right this minute Try as they did our breeders were unsuc ¬ cessful in endeavoring to buy Hyperion but they did obtain a few of his sons and daugh ¬ ters and just one of them Pensive has earned sufficient to place him on top of the leading sires of 1944 list with quite a margin over Sun Teddy We were reminded of all this when after a look at the yearlings at North Wales Stud we went over to the stallion barn to see Bahram Head Play Chrysler II and Hyperionion the full brother to Pensive that Lt Walter Chrysler master of North Wales Stud purchased at Sara ¬ toga in 1941 1941Although Although it was first planned to have Hyperionion serve a few mares and then return him to Bill Finne gan to be trained he is now defi ¬ nitely retired and will stand at the Virginia farm that has become a sliowplace of the Warrenton section To us this is an interesting experi ¬ ment for though we have always favored studs who showed excep ¬ tional ability as a race horse we un ¬ derstand Lieutenant Chryslers desire to give Hyperionion a chance to make good While this chestnut son of Englands greatest stallion did not live up to expectations on the race course he definitely proved he had a high turn of speed on some occa ¬ sions His pedigree of course is most fashionable and as a full brother of Pensive Chrysler decided to send some of his own broodmares to the court of Hyperionion As long as our breeders cannot get Hyperionion to this country it will be interesting to see what this son of Penicuik II by Buchanan can accomplish accomplishAs As we were in Toronto witnessing the Kings Plate on the day Lieutenant Chrys ¬ ler staged his yearling show it was not until this morning that we had an oppor ¬ tunity to see the babes who will carry his silks in 1945 Needless to say we were most anxious to get a look at the colts and fillies by Bahram one of the best if not the best English race horses of the past quar ¬ ter century A bay horse 1932 by Bland ford Friars Daughter by Friar Marcus Bahram was undefeated in nine starts among his victories Tieing the Triple Crown of the 2000 Guineas Derby and St Leger The success of Blenheim n naturally cen ¬ tered eyes of American breeders on all sons of Blandford and above all this unde ¬ feated race horse A syndicate of Alfred G Vanderbilt Walter Chrysler Sylvester Labrot and James Cox Brady purchased him in 1940 and it is no secret that in the past year a group of Irish and English breeders have endeavored to buy him back The American group refused to even con ¬ sider the offer offerBahram Bahram had some hard luck when first brought to this country and as a result this is the first year ¬ ling crop with a sufficient number of babes to judge him as a sire Every yearling is a gamble no matter the sire But if some of the young ¬ sters we saw today are not destined for the winners circle next year then we are wide of the mark We under ¬ stand that at the yearling show at North Wales some two weeks ago veteran Virginia horsemen selected a brown colt by Bahram Green Fee by Fairway as best of the crop They could be right of course but we are inclined to favor a bay colt by Bahram Dinner Date by Stimulus This babe is a racy looking individ ¬ ual if we ever saw one and as for pedigree well improve on this one For Dinner Date is out of Heloise by Friar Rock that grand mare who also produced Tintagel Sgt Byrne Boy Knight and now Baron Jack who cost Henry Lustig 33000 at Meadow Brook last August AugustWhen When informed that he had approxi ¬ mately 30 yearlings Lieutenant Chrysler who has been on his farm but once since Christmas told his men at the farm to 6ell 10 per cent of the total As a result only three of the crop will be sold at Mea ¬ dow Brook and they are a bay filly by Chrysler H Foxcraft by Foxlaw chest ¬ nut filly by Chrysler n Lucilia by Pom pey and a bay filly by Head Play Tidal by Bull Dog Of this trio we favor the Foxcraffc filly although we can hardly Compare her to a bay filly by Bahram Reckless by Stimulus one of the best looking members of the weaker sex we have seen this year
