JUDGES STAND By Charles Hattori More About Over Production Fighting Don and Little Foxes Hollywood Park Action Baffles Fame of Hyperion Increases IncreasesSeveral Several turf officials of our acquaintance have remarked that there seems to be a general paucity of racing material New York has a super ¬ abundance of horses as usual But the less pretentious clubs are not so fortunate And there are fewer courses in operation now than there were several weeks back Someone has said it does not matter who that one can prove anything with figures It is nevertheless interesting if not pertinent that the number of horses raced in the United States has declined steadily Re ¬ ferring to one of the most enlightening little departments in the American Racing Manual we find that 11258 thoroughbreds sported colors in 16094 races during 1943 as against 12614 in 17593 races the pre ¬ vious year Before somebody rises to say impulsively that the decrease in horses is obviously explained by the decrease in races we hasten to quote the 1941 sta ¬ tistics These show that whereas the num ¬ ber of races advanced from 16912 in 41 to 17593 in 42 the quantity of horses de ¬ clined from 13683 to 12614 Thus the available racing material has steadily diminished regardless of how the num ¬ ber of races fluctuated But we continue to hear talk of over production of horses It strikes us there is something distinctly selfish about the attitude of an element within American racing today if we may say so without calamity howling Phases of their proposals are in restraint of trade tradeRacing Racing is described as The Sport of Kings But when it veers from the democratic it invariably en ¬ counters difficulties We do not maintain that if there were three times as many owners and breeders racing would be three times as good But it would be better A salient in ¬ gredient in the sporting flavor of English racing is its quantity of small stables and studs Nor is there any pap about overproduction though fields number 25 and 30 horses whereas our own are limited to 12 usually Over here we have a Ways and Means Committee burning midnight oil to devise con ¬ ditions favorable to a minority minorityHardboots Hardboots contributed with supreme confidence to the support that developed for Miss Gertrude Donovans Fighting Don who was backed from 201 to approximate tote odds of 41 in his debut at Aqueduct which he transformed into a graduation exercise Fighting Dons mobility was the talk of Derby Town last spring He ap peaied repeatedly in horses to watch columns The consummate manner in which he earned his racing diploma dis ¬ pelled any notion he is one of racings rank flora The Morning Glory Fighting Don is a little item Kirby Ramsey picked up presumably for W J Sprow at the Lex ¬ ington sales He cost 3200 Long Island enthusiasts now look forward eagerly to seeing BurgelArab and Fighting Don molest one another in the Great American Fighting Don is eligible also for both the Washington and Arlington futurities Arthur Hancock who reared Fighting Dons youthful sire Fighting Fox fancies The Fox of Belairs brother will sire other runners and he is represented in the Claibqrne consignment to the Keeneland auctions auctionsThe The cancellation of Del Mar and Hollywood dates makes it pretty clear that the resumption of Los Angeles racing is predicated on the United Nations progress in the War Second Front activities during the summer months may produce some alterations in the war production programs around LA The can ¬ cellation of Hollywoods proposed meet was surprising even to many who had anticipated Del Mar would come upon a stymie considering their locations locationsHyperions Hyperions vogue continues to grow When Pensive added the Preakness to his conquest of the Kentucky Derby we note4 that his sire thus became the leading pro genitor both here and in England His fame attained new heights when hl daughter Hycilla flaunted William Wood wards Zetland spots to an emphatic Victory in the Epsom Oaks worth 14000 and infinitely more than that In prestige Whether Hyperion still leads England sires after the Epsom Derby we are no prepared to say Coldstreams HeliopoiB is his best son at stud here
