Maj. Williams Handicap At Fairmount to Preco Crowd of 20,000 Present for Holiday and Inaugural Card FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., May 30. One of the largest crowds to ever attend Fairmount Park witnessed the initial program of the 32-day meeting today with an estimated attendance of 20,000 which crammed every, nook and corner of the grandstand and clubhouse. Beautiful sunshine bathed the plant and added to the enpoyment.of those witnessing the running of the Maj. Ednyfed H. Williams Handicap, named in honor of the Illinois Racing Board chairman, who was the Memorial Day guest of honor. E. Reas Preco, nine-year-old son of Preferred, displayed his heels to his more favored rivals in the six-furlong feature event, being excellently handled by local jockey Willard Brinson. Preco was kept close to the early pace of Goldies Honey, and took command around the final turn. Preco drew out into a clear lead midway of the stretch but had to be hard ridden at the finish to withstand Dididida, who came from far back in a terrific burst of speed to diminish the lead to one-half length margin at the end. Beric, coupled as the J. C. Humes, Jr., and W. Sparrow entry with Doubtful, finished well to place third a length and a half farther back, while the favored Shuckin could do no better than fourth. Preco covered the distance over the fast track in 1:14 and was overlooked by most in the mutuels to pay 4.20.
