BETWEEN RACES By OSCAR OTIS GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 6 Jaclyn Stable the racing combination of Californias Jay Paley and Philadelphias Leon Levy will alter their strategy with yearlirigs they acquire this year Jaclyn of course will enter the Ken ¬ tucky breeders sales arid their pur ¬ chases instead of being shipped to California along with the racing stable will instead be sent to Aiken for school ¬ ing and education there Levy explained that inasmuch as Jaclyn seldom if ever started twoyearolds at Santa Anita he felt that the long shipment to the West Coast and then back again could do little good and perhaps take something out of the horses Hence his stable this winter to make the westward trek will be comprised only of horses able and willing to engage in actual equine warfare By the way Jaclyn for the first time is planning to race in the San Francisco area this fall The stable moves from here to Belmont will stay there until late October then take in the Tanforan meeting prior to the SantSt Anita campaign You might be interested to know the stable is quite happy over the prospects of their 70000 acquisition at the Louis B Mayer dispersal sale last winter of newly turfaed juveniles namely Imperial Jlock This fellow a full brother of the hardhitting albeit hard luck Solidarity and the fine mare Good Excuse has been training in a manner indicating true ability Seventy thousand dollars seems like a lot of money for a green twoyearold but if Jaclyn gets a liorse that can run a bit they will consider the money well spent x xA A A A Ralph West the Idaho boy now training for Jaclyn Jaclynin in making his debut in the East as a trainer West was wason on the Atlantic Seaboard once before but his stay was short and at that time he was an aide to Albert Anthony New Strategy for Jaclyn Yearling Buys 70000 Colt Imperial Rockf Promising Mori Rolls Out Wecome Mat for Citation Jersey Stakes Renewal to Be Spiced Up UpBaroni Baroni whose ageing Autocrat will represent him in Hollywood Park stakes this summer West reveals that hard luck still continues to dog his onetime Derby hope Mullato who has had so many things happen to him that he may be entered in the sweepstakes of ill fortune But Mullato can run He is being placed back in training again late next week and will get to the races at Belmont assuming that nothing else transpires to again hinder his racing career To return to the prospects of Imperial Rock for a moment it might be mentioned that West has made no preliminary decision as yet to the respective merits of that son of Alibhai and Count Willow a striking looking colt by Count Fleet Naturally no top flight trainer would make any such decision until after both colts had been engaged in actual racing and over a reasonable period of time But even so all trainers have secret fancies and usually will judge future events quite correctly A A A Eugene Mori president of Garden State Park rather hopes that Citation and Coaltown or either can see their way clear to race in the Jersey Stakes here on Saturday May 29 The Jersey is well on its way toward becoming the big event of Garden State racing and not only by virtue of it Being the richest with an added money value of 50000 Mori feels that the presence of either Citation or Coaltown will add prestige to the affair a point of view in which he is quite correct and at the same time feels that a sizable if not generous field would go post ward because of the fact that the Jersey weights start at 126 pounds and are graduated downward to 111 pounds for nonwinners of 7500 or 5000 twice Under these weight concessions some of the probable starters would be more apt tp take a chance at the famed Calumet pair The Jersey this year after being run in rather staid and reserved scales in previous renewals will blossom out with a bit of color and fanfare for its forthcoming decision The management is toying with the thought of getting a band mounted patrols and the like to add a bit of excitement to the proceedings The race will be broadcast nationally for the first time The violet is the state flower of New Jersey according to the local authorities on such matters but dubbing the race as the Run for the Violets didnt quite click so the management will entertain any suggestions along this line Best one yet received has been the Run for the Orchids OrchidsA A A A AGarden Garden State Park customer for customer must spend double the amount of any other track in America to keep the place clean Newcomers to the racing scene here are immdiately aware of a number of items one of them being the absence of litter even after the eighth race Actually Garden State has a large maintenance crew in the clubhouse and grandstand than any other track on the Atlantic Seaboard Most everything is painted white so that any dirt will show The man Mori is a positive stickler for cleanliness This of course extends to the stable area and tis said that more millionaires and folks in the upper stratosphere of racing eat in the stable kitchen here than anywhere else in the nation Mori also has added a touch that is hard to find anywhere else This is the distribution of lounges of the type usually reserved for swank turf clubs for the convenience of the grandstand patrons Indeed Garden State spends more time keeping the grandstand customer happy than most any place we have ever been
