JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton Grissom Forms New Stud at Old Duntreath Imprudence Lends Interest to Filly Races First Four Freedoms Gratify Del Holeman Asbury Reports on Affairs at Hedgewood HedgewoodLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky May 20 20The The Grissom and Sherman horses have been winning on all fronts in the Middle West and Grissom has a firstrate stud farm here in Duntreath which he purchased last year There is a splendid stand of blue grass and one imagines thab the 23 yearlings recently sent here by the French Bloodstock Agency will thrive on it We had a look at these colts and fillies recently and in the group are the progeny of Goya ns sire Tourbillon Imprudences sire Canot and the successful young Djebel Grissom has 11 mares at Duntreath and in this collection are some that turfgoers will remember such as Cup Cake Dorothy Agnes and Ima Dear These three have foals by Tintagel who is in service at the farm Another of the De troiters mares is Mesella who is a halfsister to Salmagundi and has a Swift and Sure colt There is also a young War Ad ¬ miral mare Called Best Blister who has a colt by Tintagel Frank Frankel has two mares at Duntreath and manager T C Wil ¬ liams tells us that one of these Lady Erne has foaled a nice colt by Blenheim II Frankel has booked her to the South American horse Brown King this spring Grissom has been racing horses for about a decade and sold a Michigan farm before establishing a stud at Duntreatlr He also has a small farm at Louisville where the horsesintraining occasionally are turned out to freshen up between campaigns campaignsMention Mention of Imprudence above reminds us that she seems to have impressed Belmont Park workwatchers quite favorably A fouryearold brown daughter of Canot and the Hurry On mare Indiscretion she showed genuine class in France and England last season Imprudence won the English 1000 Guineas from 19 rivals and defeated the French Oaks winner Montenica in the French Guineas She ran right away from her field in the Epsom Oaks Visitors from abroad say that she was not a fast beginner but that she was a particularly game mare in a drive We think that Harry Guggenheim bought her largely for the stud but in the meantime she may lend much interest to events such as the Top Flight Vagrancy and the Beldame It will be remarkable if she wins stakes here as well as in England and France FranceDel Del Holeman is rounding to after an operation at his Pilot Knob Farm near jGallatin He reports that 17 foals have ar ¬ rived at this Tennessee nursery and of this number 10 are colts which is an enviable score There also are 15 yearlings at Pilot Knob mostly by Stir Ups brother Hayride and the Brooklyn Handicap winner Four Freedoms The first crop by Four Freedoms now are of racing age and Holeman declares that Insofar as I know only three have started and each of these has placed in a photo finish Holeman has much confidence in this son of Peace Chance and Phar Laps sister Nea Lap The dean of the Tennessee breeders tells us that Mrs John Branhams good mare Night Shadow now is at Tommy Carr Piatts Crestwood Farm here to be bred to Hal Price Headleys stallion Pharamond H Of course the result of this mating will be inbred to Phalaris whose blood is prized so highly both here and in England Midwest racegoers will recall Night Shadow as a winner of the Illinois Owners Handicap and other important events She is by Mrs Branhams Man ONigljt a firstrate sire of fillies among them W C Hobsons accomplished Shine ONight who won the New England Oaks and two runnings of the Arlington Matron MatronSmall Small breeders all the way from New York to Nash ¬ ville are represented in the bloodstock that Charles A Asbury has at his Hedgewood Farm near here The light footed Brookfield joined Market Wise and Carrier geon in service there this spring You might say thai at least he has made a good beginning Asbury said today My sons mare Cypress Point was the first bred to him and she is in foal Also at Hedgewood is Mildred Woolwines Chantress who is the dam of Marylands popular Saggy and is to be bred to Bull Lea Not forgetting the mare Peroxide who belongs to Coleman and Lurding of Louis ¬ ville and has a smart Whirlaway colt foal She is to be bred to Pensive who incidentally seems to have caught George Wideners fancy when he saw him recently at Calumet Of Asburys own mares he is partial to James ville She is the dam of many winners and her nine yearold son James Quest was a sort of Iron Mask of Sunshine Park last winter He still is quite capable of 112 112Turf Turf ana We expect that we shall see a good deal of Devils Red at Chicago this summer but one of the more modish fillies may sport Marse Tom Piatts white and green from the manner in which Hang Up won her debut It turns out we erred in placing the Melrose farm in Ohio It is at Union Ky and his filly Seeley is the second foal and second winner from her dam Planetoid was this spring bred to C V Whitneys Mahmoud John Stanley plans to race a twoyearold half sister of Double Jay this season She is by Halcyon and is called Anne Stanley Mrs Graham has made Myrtle Charm who is by Alsab from Crepe Myrtle eligible for the Arlington Lassie
