Martin Whelan Outlasts Charging Seely by Nose NoseFast Fast Cudahy Juvenile Runs Five Furlongs in 59 at Homewood HomewoodWASHINGTON WASHINGTON PARK Homewood 111 June 4 Robert Cudahy young member of Chicagos society set provided an impres ¬ sive winner of the Friar Rock Purse when Martin Whelan lasted to prevail over Tor ¬ rence C Melroses Seely by a nose before a sweltering gathering of 8107 here this afternoon Third in the fivefurlong dash carded exclusively for twoyearolds was Mrs Emil Denemarks fastcharging Slick Pigeon only a half a length farther away awayA A dark bay son of Man ONight Cherry Lane Martin Whelan was smartly han ¬ dled by Tony Skoronski and dashed the distance in 59 With the wagering cen ¬ tered on Fair Degree and Seely Martin Whelan who was coupled with Slick Pigeon returned 1360 1360Trainer Trainer Bob McGarvey however had him as sharp as the proverbial tack for this afternoons engagement and he was up with the running throughout He raced teamed with Pnut Vendor going down the backstretch and around the turn while the others seemed well beaten beatenSeely Seely who is eligible for the Miss Amer ¬ ica Stakes and who was making herfirst start over this course after a series of fast morning moves was unable to show her vounted early speed from the uotside post position but nearing the straightaway she reached contention then swung wide at a loss of several lengths She continued on gamely down to the finish but lacked the necessary spurt in the last few yards to overhaul the Cudahy representative representativeAs As the face was run however Slick Pigeon was possibly best The colt worked his way forwardly and as they settled for the final drive he was making up much ground When Larry Grubb hit him with the whip Slick Pigeon swerved badly in back of horses to the rail He was forced to come around and drive between the two leaders in a flashy final bid that just fell short shortDonal Donal Bowcut a 20yearold apprentice from Burley Idaho came through with an especially fine ride in the fifth when he booted S Ippolitos Bessie Vance to a nar ¬ row victory that found three horses locked together on the line Lucas B Combs Uncle Rob the favorite and D Emerys Raffle House finished in a dead heat for the place Bowcut had Bessie Vance away in stride and when the field settled on the backstretch she was joined by Uncle Rob who was ridden by Steve Brooks now in the throes of a bad slump When Brooks elected to press the issue Bowcut wisely steadied his mount and nearing the turn into the stretch once again went into the lead leadBrooks Brooks however still had something left with Uncle Rob and quickly regained com ¬ mand The maneuvering between the vet ¬ eran rider and the youngster carried right on down to the wire with Bessie Vance showing the most courage While the lead ¬ ers were enmeshed in their lively struggle Raffle House did not seem a contender until the final eighth when he surged up with a powerful rush dashed through a small opening between Bessie Vance and Uncle Rob and in another stride or two probably would have scored
