Alphara Takes Measure Of King Rhymer in Drive DriveCatches Catches Pacemaker at Sixteenth Pole Then Draws Out at Belmont BelmontBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y June 4 Alphara carried the silks of J H Skirvin to a driving victory in the featured White Cockade Purse at Belmont Park to ¬ day catching Mrs Rea Warners pacemak ing King Rhymer at the sixteenth pole and drawing away to score by a length and a half Alfred G Vanderbilts Newsweekly was a little more than a length away and three and a half lengths before C A ONeil Jrs Galedo Greentree Stables favored Star Bout had dead aim on the leaders at the quarter pole but pinned his ears back and refused to run from that point finish ¬ ing last in the field of seven threeyear olds oldsEric Eric Guerin rode Alphara who paid 760 and ran the six furlongs in 111 A typical Friday crowd of 21470 turned out in weather that proved to be bright and sunny by the first race despite gloomy pre ¬ dictions and overcast morning skies Ted Atkinson starred in the saddle with a triple winning with Bunty Jewel and Roberto in the first and third races respectively and A J Ryans Ted Wes in the nightcap nightcapKing King Rhymer went to the front at tht start of the White Cockade followed by Alphara and Galedo who was on the rail while Star Bout was close at hano on the outside and Newsweekly Grandpere and Big If followed the leaders leadersKing King Rhymer gradually widened his lead between the turns but began to bear out at the head of the stretch then appeared to sulk under the whip as Alphara charged up on the inside At the same moment Star Bout flatly refused to run and Atkinsons whip failed to change his mind mindAs As Alphara drew away King Rhymer had no great trouble staving off the closing rush of Newsweekly Galedo ran a fair race but had nothing much at the end after saving ground all the way
