Flanders Challe Anne winner of the Kentucky Oaks and third in the recent Coaching Club American Oaks provided a thrill for 16722 patrons when she emerged victorious in the twentyfirst running of the 15000 Lincoln Handicap as the Lincoln Fields Racing Association bowed out of the 1948 thoroughbred picture here this afternoon The only filly in the small field of six and a threeyearold at that Challe Anne led virtually throughout and hung on with grim determination through the stretch to arrive safely under the wire with a one and onequarter length advantage advantageIn In back of her came Augustus Nahms Eternal Reward and Dixianas Star Re ¬ ward with the former gaining the place decision by the shortest possible margin Jacob Shers Frere Jacques offered weak opposition but was best of the others othersCovers Covers Mile and Quarter in 203 Flanders hails from Muskegon Mich and is the breeder of Challe Anne The threeyearold daughter of Challedon Victorious Ann by Victorian raced the strides they were closely aligned Then Challe Anne who actually broke last forged to the front and by the time they reached the first turn she was clear and Smith wisely took her under a steadying hold At this point Frere Jacques and Eternal Reward engaged in a bumping melee and it didnt benefit either for Challe Anne was striding along nicely with ¬ out opposition oppositionAs As they moved down the backstretch Star Reward began his bid for a better position and it seemed that he was going places when Jack S L ranged along and forced him into a tight pocket Brooks took up sharply on the Dixiana star and once again found himself in last position That incident cost Star Reward valuable time and position and when he finally made another run he took the overland route at a loss of ground groundChalle Challe Anne in the meantime opened up a lead of several lengths and was show ¬ ing no signs of weakening She entered the stretch going easily and Eternal Re ¬ ward found his favorite place along the rail while Star Reward on the outside put in their challenges Both tried desperately and were within striking distance but found Challe Anne a worthy rival especially at the weights DoctorTorrerice Torrerice C Melroses Hash Night was the medium of heavy support in the fourth and managed to get home in fine style by four lengths However there were a few moments when those who backed him into 420 favoritism received a scare for round ¬ ing the turn into the stretch he attempted to bear out badly Eldon Nelson however was equal to the task reached down for a handful of reins and steadied the colt until straightened away for the drive At that point Hash Night ducked to the inside rail but was perfectly clear of his foes and caused no trouble Big Heralder owned by Mr and Mrs J Gunter was easily best of the others beating H P Christiansens Dad by three lengths lengthsNelson Nelson who is the leading apprentice rider of the meeting recorded his twentieth triumph thus
