JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton 1 1Arlington Arlington Offers 18 Stakes in 36 Days Hyde Park Today Tests Record Breakers Miss Mommy Qualifies for Filly Feature Miss Sal K Proves Bargain Yearling7 Yearling7Arlington Arlington Park again will offer some of the best sport of the racing year at the meet of 36 days which begins today Ben F Lindheimer has announced an agenda of 18 stakes events to ba decided at the fashionable North Side course beginning with the Hyde Park and ending with the 60000 added Classic on closing day July 31 A couple of stakes have been dropped from the coordinated Arlington and Washington roster but they will scarcely be missed and the purses range from 2500 to 10000 Lindheimer has indicated that a special event will be offered again this sum ¬ mer if any seems warranted and may be arranged There will be three stakes each of the six weeks of the Arlington meeting For instance the Hyde is followed on Wednesday by the Princess Doreen for threeyearold fillies and on Saturday by the challenging Equipoise Mile You may remember that it was at this course Equipoise ran his world record mile of 134 By the way when racing secretary W R Duke Dahlstrom saw both Armed and Citation in the nomina ¬ tions for this affair he said I really think that it would be flattering Armed to start at the scale with such a threeyear old then added philosophically Perhaps one will be declared Race goers will note few changes at Arlington Park this season except for the new turnstiles and the barn which replaces that lost in the tragic Maine Chance fire But then we thought it a pleasant place to go racing in past years yearsThe The Hyde Park will take a good deal of winning even though many of the Chicago horses particularly the two yearolds are suffering from the cough The three colts Ol Skipper Olympia and Ky Colonel ran in track record time of 58Vf back at Lincolnat Washington and none of these is at all likely to be run over in any field By the way we have a note from Danny Van Clief of the Nydrie Stud in Virginia to the effect that the mare Sea ¬ way who is the dam of Ol Skipper now has a nice colt foal by First Fiddle richest of the worlds gray thorough ¬ breds The Eastern fillies Flower Bed and Imacomin are recent arrivals with the Lassie as their objectives Then there is Warren Wrights string of Bull Leas and Whirl aways None of these was quite ready for the Hyde HydeBen Ben Lindheimer goes in for diversified stakes and purse pro ¬ grams There are Arlington features for two and threeyear old fillies filliesandmares sprinters milers and turf course specialists in addition to the Arlington Handicap and Classic over the popular mile and a quarter route If there is any pos ¬ sible constructive criticism of the stakes perhaps it is the absence of any filly event beyond one mile The first of these affairs is the Princess Doreen at six furlongs on Wednesday and the nominations are rather notable for the presence of Bewitch and Whirl Some who swept the boards of last seasons two yearold filly stakes Harry Isaacs Itsabet and Fred Hoopers Silly Gyp have in common that they are by Heliopolis and can run They are not out of their element in this 25000 and Miss Mommy returned to the races in splendid form Another of the clubs attractions for threeyearold fillies is the Cleo ¬ patra Handicap at a mile on July 14 This also is one of Arling ¬ tons seven 25000 races racesHarry Harry Bensinger furniture dealers and sportsman of New Albany and Louisville seems to have bought well when he paid Warner Jones Jr of Derby Town 1600 for Miss Sal K at the 47 yearling sales This filly was the cheapest of 18 of the gel of Mereworths potent sire Ilairan offered at auction last year Miss Sal K had won an overnighter at Oaklawn previous to her success in the initial running of the 10000 Miss America Stakes Alsabs Day who is not yet a stakes wniner was fast pick ¬ ing up Miss Sal K in that affair She created an impres ¬ sion that she may be more successful when the distances of the twoyearold races are stretched out to six furlongs at Arlington Park By the way Miss Sal K is trained by the capable horseman J P Tiny Keezek who was one of the late Jack Keenes staff in Russia Keezek was the leading rider of Poland for three years yearsTurf Turf ana Herbert M Woolf has brought out a most popular bug rider in Eldon Nelson Frequently he has a choice among two or three mounts to the race Johnny Zoeller tells us that Alsab who used to relish the icing on birthday cakes has developed a taste for peanuts and almond bars There were only nine nominees for last weekends Lincoln cap As the story goes Opossum the sire of Shaws Pride was placed in training after serving his dam Lang His connections lost a bet castrated him and turned him out in Indiana La Car melita In Fraganti and Mogador are to race for Prince Djor djadze here at Arlington Coincidentally the fiveyearold Hash mare Trixie a halfsister of Miss Sal K won the race following the Miss America
