SHADY TUNE, intermittently urged to be within striking distance, was steered to the outside on the stretch turn, wrested command entering the last furlong and -continued determinedly. MISS JOAN N IE, Unhurried while trailing, was rallying when she ran into a blind switch midway the final turn and was sharply taken up, then outran SPINNING TOP to an opening in the stretch drive and appeared capable of winning, but hung. WINNING STRIDE, bumped off stride and wide at the first turn, recovered to reach the leaders entering the backstretch, wrested a short lead from the outside at the head of the homestretch, but weakened. SPINNING TOP, unable to get completely clear racing while next to the rail, was rallying nicely when outmaneuvered to an opening entering the last furlong and was forced back by MISS JOANNE. ATALANTA assumed command when ready down the backstretch, gradually gave way to WINNING STRIDE in the early stretch and weakened. FAGA-LA bumped GRANULE when the latter bore in on her entering the first turn, knocking GRANULE back. Scratched 214762 Intencion, 109. APPIAN WAY raced along evenly for a half-mile, rapidly overhauled the leaders when gunned at the far turn and continued his speed evenly to draw out. SWIVET went to the front under restraint, but offered little resistance to the winner and was riding at the end. MOUCHE had no excuse. NEAR SHORE was not a serious threat. LIGHTSPEED was outrun.
