SrEEDY CHARLES EDWARD. CANTERS AWAY WITH THE SEAGATE STAKES AT BRIGHTON IN 1:50 3-5. It Is a New American Record for One Mile and an Eighth Dlnna Ken, the Realization Winner, Second. New York, July lti. Charles Edward is a new aspirant for the turf crown now worn ly Potcr Pan as the king of llic three-year-olds. In the Seagate Stakes at Brighton Beach today the magnificent son of Golden Garter and Flora Mac earned tlie right to rank in t lie championship class ly cantering away ut the end of a mile and an eighth from sneli cracks as Dlnna Ken, Monforl, Kentucky Beau and Zambesi in 1:502, the fastest ever recorded in America for the distance. Dlnna Ken, fresh from a splendid viclory over Frank Gill, Salvidere and Zambesi in the Lawrence Realization, was considered a certain winner before the race and held at almost prohibitive odds at the opening of the betting. It was a panicky market, however, and the favorites price went up lo -J to 5 for a time, finally going back to 7 to 10 at post time. The price about the winner remained steady and encouraging enough, although it lengthened in a natural way from tlie opening. The others were not In demand to any extent. The lightly weighted Kentucky Beau made Hie running to the half with the impatiently ridden Dinna Ken in injudiciously close pursuit. Charles Edward was biding bis time in the rear, bill always within striking distance. When the favorite moved up at tlie end of live furlongs the Dubois repre-nentativc quickly joined him, and afler a thrilling bead and head struggle for one hundred yards on the turn Charles Kdward drew out anil, coming on with giant strides, won cantering by six lengths from the hard-pressed Whitney geVUng. which just lasted long enough to save second place from the fast-coming Monfort. In view of the fact that the time made in the other races was not especially fust, probably owing to the strong wind that blew ui the stretch and with tlie track dusty and seemingly slower than usual, Charles Edwards performance at tin; weight, 120 pounds, must be set down ns marking him an extraordinary good liorse. The tabled history of the Seagate Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. lS99Ethelbcrt 1121 Maher ,450 2:09H 19001. of Melbourne. .120 Spencer ... 2.150 2:05 1901 Gold Heels 119 T. Hums .. 2,075 1:52 1902 Obi England 12:! L. Knapp.. 3,315 1:50J At 1 1-1 miles. Aside of the stake fixture, tlie racing was moderate and without incident. An unpopular novelty race in which maiden jockeys disported themselves, opened the days proceedings. It resulted in a victory for Koyal lien, the favorite and best backed liorse in the race, however. A. J. Joyner entrusted his colt Uialto to Miller today with vastly different results than when his regular stable jockey, Horner, rides. Strange to say, the colt was made a top-heavy favorite in the ring, although he had shown nothing previously. Yorkist earned a lucky victory in the third. Ilcase, fresh from Buffalo, spreadeagled a big field of sterling two-year-olds in tlie tiftii and a coup was engineered witii Berwick in the concluding affair at six furlongs. Witii the favorites and the second choices sharing equally in tlie racing honors on the afternoon, the ring must have had a bad day.
