NIMBUS LACKS HIS CUSTOMARY SPEED. Odds-On Favorite in Melrose Stakes Runs Third — Apache Equals Track Record. New York. August 1. — The running of the Melrose Stakes at Yonkers today resulted iu a big surprise when Nimbus, the odds-on choice, was beaten by Black Mate and Superstition. Black Mate had been backed from 20 to 12 to 1. No excuses could be assigned for the Odom starters failure. He lacked tin- speed that has marked his recent races, while Black Mate and Superstition both showed decided improvement. Of equal racing importance was a handicap at a mile and twenty yards, which was won easily by Apache in 1:411, equaling the track record recently established by Prince Gal with 110 pounds up.
