WHIST IS DERBY WINNER BELMONT COLT LEADS MERIDIAN AND GOVERNOR GRAY TO FINISH AT HAMILTON. Naushon. a Hot Favorite, Is Disappointment of the Race — Hamiltons Greatest Racing Crowd Present. Hamilton. Whist was ridden liy Eddie Dugan. followed the iiaeemaker. It. 1". Carmans Kent ueky Derby winner. Meridian, until ■tratghtCMd out In the homestretch, tlun dashed to the front and, drawing away with ease in the final furlong, won hy a couple of lengths in time equaling the track record of 2:05 for the mile and a Matter. There were five starters. Trap Rock, Edda. Novelty. Zeus and The Nigger betag withdrawn. When S. C. Hildretli scratched his pair. . trainer Tom lirah-y secured C. H. Shilling to ride Naushon, and the Wilson colt ruled an odds-oil favorite, "apt. J. T. Williams, who sbip] cd Oover-BOC Cray f n mi Kentucky to run In the race, ex-preaaei a wish that Meridian would be a starter, and his wish was gratified, as Mr. Carman decided to start his colt at the last minute. Captain Wil liams predicted that the winner would be forced in run in faster time than 12:04. They wore a well behaved lot at the peat and starter Dade sent them away to a good break. Meridian was first to show, and despite his heavy latpaat of 127 pounds Archibald sent him to the front and made the pace. Meridian was anxious to run and. showing good speed, opened a lead of a -ouple of lengths rounding the first turn. K. Dngaa dropped Whist in liehind him. while C. H. Shilling was already busy taking Naushon off Iaged. which was trying to savage The order down the backstretch was Meridian. Whist. Naushon. Oarer aor Cray and Iagod. and they ran wo until entering the homestretch. At this stage Shilling appeared to have Naushon well in hand and to shrewd observers it looked as if the Wilson colt could go to the trout when his rider wished. Straightened out lor the final drive. Dugan shook Whist up and the Belmont colt responded with great dash and quickly showed in the lead. Naushon. however, flattened out and sulked when Shilling called mi him. refusing to try. In the run home Whist had everything his own way and won with eoinparat ive ease by a couple of lengths from the heavily weighted Meridian, which in turn In it Governor Gray a length and a half for second place. Naushon followed four lengths back and then came Iagod. Considering his heavy impost Meridian ran a splendid race. Naushon sulked last season just as he did today when trainer Healey ran him without blinkers. Governor Cray met with early interference and when Rico made his move he worked his way up on the outside. The winner, however, was a keen factor right from the start and Dugan had him well in hand throughout the first mile. The Hamilton Derby was instituted in IMS. Its brief history is as follows: Year. Jt id rode his first winner in that country when he Won a Derby at Couvieux. Disc, on a horse trained hy Galea ltmwu. The latter saddled four winners in two days. Kobert McK.ever received word that the steeple-ebaaer, De Miliid. had broken down while being worked at Chantilly. France, last week. An effort will lie made to patch up the horse. Sanctus is going along nicely. While being galloped on the roads this morning. I lie filly l.ady Iconic ran into fence and injured herself so badly that it was found necessary to destroy her. Detective tad Cast Steel, in the same stable. hare also geae amiss. William Murray, who is promoting the new- track at Niagara Falls. Out., was a visitor here this af ternooii. He reports that everything will be in readiness for the opening which will immediately follow the meeting at Fort Erie.
