BREAKING RECORDS AT EMPIRE CITY. Fernrock Takes the Morrisania Handicap and- Tragedy Wins the Demoiselle Stakes. New York. July 10. There were two feature races at Empire City today which were run over a fast track and under a broiling sun. In the Morrisania Handicap Fernrock covered one mile and seventy yards in 1:43, which reduced by two-fifths of a second the track record made by Water Cure. October 23, !. and equalled by Hedge two years ago. Trial by Jury and Holy wen; made the choices for the race, but the smart set were inclined to favor the chances of llank ODay and Fernrock. Mr. Schorr thought he had an excellent chance to win with Hank ODay, but he was not a match for any of bis opponents. Fernrock set the pace and Holy joined him on the backstretch ami ran bead and head for a while until Holy retired. Fernrock appeared beaten when Trial by Jury loomed into prominence, but Fernrock had something loft, while the weight told on Trial by Jury and he tired on the way home. The Demoiselle stakes went to Tragedy, carrying the lop weight of 1112 pounds. She covered the route in game fashion, responding to the fast pace; set by Marie Odile and coming on in the stretch to win going away. 1 lather was slow about getting into action and ran into the third place for awhile, but was wanting when the decisive; racing came. Tragedy may bo one of the good fillies of the year, at least that is the general impression after her game showing today. King Maggot made good in the first easily at prohibitive odds. The colt was entered for XI. 101 and J. W. Ile.lrick bid ,500. but his bid was loo bite. Hedrick visited tin; stewards stand and entered a protest, but it was not allowed. J. W. May was in receipt of a message from his father. Capt. W. F. May. who was injured by being struck by an automobile yesterday. The message staled he was not seriously hurt, merely being bruised a trifle. Sam McMeekiu, winner of the second race, was advanced from ,500 to SH.ltlO by J. Kelly, but was retained by his new owner, Joseph Marrone. Favorites were knocked over like ten-pins this afternoon. Even Kilkenny Itoy, which has won several races in succession, was badly beaten. I.oots won the race for which Kilkenny J toy was held at short odils and made a new rack record of 1:!S, for one mile, taking one-fifth of a second from the mark made by Prince Ahmed, July 2i, i!IO. When J. W. Hedrick lodge a protest against the rejection of his bid of ,500 on King Raggnt. which was made too late, he forfeited 50 according to rule Ml. which covers frivolous claims. James I.utlcr entertained the members of the press and a number of horsemen at dinner at his country home this evening. W. T. Anderson and J. Kelly were both fined .SKID for violation of rule Kit on complaint of J. L. Marrone. This rule applies to intimidation regarding the running up of winners and claiming in selling races.
