RACING RECORDS OF 1919 Three New American Marks Made During the Present Year. ! Times for Various Distances at the Different Tracks Undergo Many Changes. y The existing1 American time records are already so fast that excelling any of them is ii matter of extreme difficulty, so that when a new one is made" it represents :i display of speed of the highest order. Nevertheless three new American records were established and three old marks were equaled during the racing of 1919. Distinction lowered the four and a. half furlongs record to 52 at Iitonia .Tune 10, Sir Barton eclipsed Irish Lads time of 2:17 for one and three-eighths miles, made in 1904, when he ran the distance in 2:17 at He n ion t Park June 11, and Thunderclap on October 11 at Laurel Park gained fame by reducing the mile and a half record of 2:30i, established by Coodricli at Washington Park, Chicago, in 1898. I 2:29, On August 5 at Saratoga Fairy Wand displayed a remarkable flight of speed to equal the mile record of 1:30, made by Sun Briar at the same track in 1918. Sweep On equaled Brookdale Nymphs time of 1:17 for six and one-half furlongs when he won the Richmond Handicap at Belmont 1 Park May 31. That superb colt, The Porter, gained inclusion among the reeord-breakers by equaling the mile and seventy yards record of 1:41 at Churchill Downs May 30. That concluded the successful assaults on the American time records, the new and equaled times made during 1919 being as follows: Dist. Horse. A.Wt. Track. -Date. Belmont Park iins always been noted as an exceptionally fast track, but the reconstruction of that course last winter made it even faster, and the result was that several of the old time marks were shattered. Saratoga, where so many changes -were made in the time records in 1918. was not quit as fast this year, and only one new mark was hung up, although two of the old ones were equaled. Changes were made at all the principal courses over which racing was conducted, the new times made at the various distances during 1919 being shown under the names of the different tracks, arranged in alphabetical order, the only omissions being those at New Orleans and Havana, where racing is still in progress: Aqueduct.
