ENGLANDS GRAND FILLY RACE EPSOM OAKS OLDER THAN THE DERBY AND TO HAVE ITS ONE HUNDRED AND FORTYSECOND RUN ¬ NING THIS DAY OVER THE DERBY COURSE The Epsom Oaks for threeyearold fillies antedates the Derby by one year as a fixture in racing history It was first run in 1779 and was won by Lord Derbys Bridget He Avon it again in 1794 witli Hermiono but it was not until more than a century had passed by that another Lord Derby won the Oaks with his good filly Canterbury Pilgrim The winner of 1801 was the groat Eleanor which was the first filly to win the Derby also This notable achievement was not duplicated until the immortal Queen Marys wonderful daughter Blink Bonny did it in 1857 Sinco then this difficult feat has been placed to the credit of Signorinetta in 1908 and of Fifinella in 1910 The Oaks is tho companion race of the Derby and is contested over the snme track and at the same distance and weights For many years past this Derby has been contested on Wednesdays and the Oaks on Fridays the custom homing good this year One of the reminiscences of the race is that Foxhall Keeno took the American filly Cap and Bejls over to England for the especial purpose of winning the Oaks of 1901 and did it without a particle of trouble It was a lucky year for the venture because tho next year was that of the remarkable filly Sceptre which if foaled a year earlier would probably have taken Cap and Bells into camp as easily as the latter did Sabrinetta However the fact remains that Cap and Bells did win Englands greatest filly race and stands on record as its only Americanbred winner Tho record of tho fourth of Englands classics since 1850 is here presented presentedYear Year Owner Winner Odds Jockey Second Third Time Vnlno 1850 Mr Hobsons Khedycina 01 F Itutler Kathleen
