ATHANNA appeared sore when going to the post, but raced well on the outside of the leaders and, after coming wide on the stretch turn, finished with a rush and won in the last stride. EAU GALLIE was outpaced in the early running and raced very wide on the turns, but finished with a belated rush. VIRGINIA FOX showed the most early speed, but tired near the end. MERRIMAC; suddenly improved and doing his best, was saved behind CITATION and, taking the lead when the latter tired, kept the pace fast and, under a mild drive, held the race safe at the finish. GUY, outpaced early, moved up with a rush after rounding the far turn, but tired finally under his weight. COTTON BLOSSOM raced forwardly all the way and outgamed BUNGA BUCK at the end. The latter was in clore quarters early and dropped out of forward contention, but closed up and was running fast at the end. CITATION quit after showing high early speed in pacemaking.
