INAUGURAL AT THORNCLIFFE Favorites Disappoint Large Open ¬ ing Day Crowd at Toronto Tlioniaslncand Diminutive Jockey Brown BrownProve Prove Surprising Combination In Fifth Itacc Lieutenant II Huns Second TORONTO Ont May 30 The Thorncliffe Breeders and Racing Association inaugurated their spring meeting at the beautiful Leaside course under cloudy skies but despite the threatening overhead conditions a surpris ¬ ingly large crowd turned out to witness the good sport that was offered Track condi ¬ tions were fast and good time was recorded in the various races of which the fifth was decided under handicap conditions at one mile and a sixteenth The other attractions were the first and fourth races the first the Pageant Purse for juveniles and the fourth for Canadianbreds called the Caledonian CaledonianForm Form players were all at sea during the afternoon as favorites failed badly in the majority of the races Outsiders scored in the first five races offered offeredThomasine Thomasine and the diminutive juckey O Brown proved a winning combination in the mile and sixteenth race that was fifth on the program when the Superman Thamar mare raced to victory over five oth ¬ ers that vied with her for honors Second to the winner and beaten a length came the public choice Lieutenant II with C C Smithsons Aucilla taking the small end of the purse Lactarius finished in fourth place and back of him came Goldbeater and Golden Billows BillowsFLATTERS FLATTERS BACKERS BACKERSLieutenant Lieutenant II from a good start flattered his backers by taking a brief lead but Thomasine was right alongside and racing in her best form and it was evident she was destined to make things interesting for any of her opponents These two set a fast pace from the start while the others were in fairly close order save for Aucilla who was far back Lieutenant II met the mares challenges readily for the first three quarters but on entering the home stretch he began to tire and Horn went to the whip This however did not prove enough to resist the Meister starters rush and she forged to the front midway in the stretch to win under mild urging Lactarius after racing in third place most of the distance succumbed to Aucilla in the last few strides for third place placeSix Six platers faced the barrier for the mile and seventy yards sixth race and Donat Raymonds Great Rock showed a clean pair of heels to his opponents when he raced back of the fast pace set by Canister and when called on took command to score with speed in reserve by a margin slightly better than a length Comet was the one to take second place and Dancing Fool proved best of the remaining three starters startersBlind Blind Cast racing for the Mack Adam Stable furnished the first upset of the aft ¬ ernoon when he took the measure of Cayuga the heavily backed choice for the juvenile contest that opened the afternoons sport in addition to four others that made up the field At the end of the journey and after showing the way from the beginning Blind Cast just managed to keep his head in front to get the decision while just a length and a half back of the pair came Toanna to take the minor end of the spoils spoilsSPIRITED SPIRITED FINISH FINISHEleven Eleven wellmatched sprinters paraded in the second race and furnished a spirited finish in which the winner was in doubt until the official placing was announced The posting of the official numbers gave the decision to G O Miltons Body Guard with Dignus second the third part of the purse going to Hole Card the latter being the choice for the contest Dignus as has been her custom in most of her starts took com ¬ mand soon after the start with the ultimate winner in cosest attendance Bourassa elected to take the outside route with Hole Card The above tiio were leading the others by comfortable margins and in the drive that ensued from the top of the stretch to the end Body Guard proved the better finisher and he just managed to get his nose to the front in the last stride strideThe The Caledonian Purse fashioned for provincebreds over the mile route had eight starters and once again players of form received a setback when Forecast II accounted for the purse in a severe drive by a head from Taurus with Hoi Polloi taking the small portion of the purse Taurus appeared to be best but Walkers blunder ¬ ing ride was largely responsible for his de ¬ feat as he rode a very indifferent race on the R H New starter With better riding there would not have been room for doubt as to the superiority of the second horse horseThe The Leaside Purse the first of the fea ¬ ture events to be decided brought out six good racers to show their speed over the threequarters route and the second surprise of the afternoon came with the running when Back Row making the first start of his Canadian racing of this year was re ¬ turned an easy victor by scoring by three and onehalf lengths from Sun Forward his nearest pursuer while a margin of eight lengths separated the second and third horses horsesThe The horses of W Booth Sewickley Stable and the Winburn Stable will be shipped to New York
