SPRINTERS IN THE LIMELIGHT Speed Handicap Feature of Bel mont Park Program Happy Argo Gallops Fire and a Half Fur ¬ longs Over Widencr Course in 104 Establishing JTew Time Record NEW YORK N Y June 7 Sprinters held the center of the stage at Belmont Park to ¬ day with the Speed Handicap as the feature of a good card It was a five and a half fur ¬ long dash over the Widener course and when Happy Argo from Bernard A Baruchs Ker shaw Stable was winner in 104 he made a new record for the distance The race was worth 4725 to the winner winnerConditions Conditions were ideal for racing and the usual big crowd was in attendance while the j sport was of a quality to keep the crowd well i entertained entertainedFifteen Fifteen went to the post for the Speed I Handicap and at the end of the dash Mrs K E Hitts Whatll I Do was right at the heels of Happy Argo and closely lapped on her was Black Curl from H F Sinclairs Rancocas Stable Clearance Black Curl and Marche Militaire the A C Bostwick starter all took turns in forcing the fast pace and at the last eighth post it was Marche Mili ¬ taire that looked all over a winner winnerAt At that stage of the race the Bostwick gelding was showing the way but just in ¬ side the final eighth he tired and Black Curl headed him while Whatll I Do was close after the Rancocas filly Happy Argo was racing along on the inside in a welltimed move by Steve ODonnell In the last six ¬ teenth Happy Argo had joined the leaders and one in front he was never headed to win by a length in record time as has been told Whatll I Do finished gamely while Black Curl tired badly after her early effort The others were well strung out with Pan tella one of the H P Whitney starters after having been knocked back early finished last lastIn In this race Johnny Maiben made his first appearance under silks since his Maryland injury He had the mount on Walter J Salmons Powhatan but he was not able to reach a contending position at any stage of the race raceJ J Hollands Gnome Girl was rather a handy winner of the opening seveneighths dash for fillies and mares Fator had her away fast and she was good enough to force the pace throughout and at the end was three lengths clear of Pichonne a filly from the Sagamore Stable with N Loscazos Avisack II finishing a close third thirdPichonne Pichonne had followed the pace of Gnome Girl closely throughout but she was tiring at the end and would have lost the place in a few more strides Martha Martin after Continued on twentieth page SPRINTERS IN THE LIMELIGHT Continued from first page racing forwardly to the stretch gave way to Avisack II IIBrown Brown Stout was one that had a bit of mis ¬ fortune in the running She was in closo quarters leaving the barrier and was forced to race wide on the turn out of the back stretch and again on the turn for home With better racing luck she would surely have finished closer up The upThe Greentree Stables Handy with Effio and Hogans Alley were the ones to show the way in the early stages and there was little to choose among the three of them whilo Diavolo began slowly and did not seem to have a chance as he left the barrier barrierOf Of the leaders Handy was first to tire and dropped back Effie Hogans Alley and Scotch and Soda were leaders but Diavolo was steadily working his way up and right at the end dropped his head down in front while Scotch and Soda in turn was just a head before Hypnotism with Hogans Alley lapped on the pair of them What made the race impressive was the game finish of the winner winnerFlippant Flippant from the Sage Stable in a driv ¬ ing finish was winner of the mile and a six teenth Raceland Purse from the Rosedala Stables Ceylon Fringe with H P Whit ¬ neys Byrd a distant third and showing the way to Cantankerous Forever and Ever and Royal Play PlayByrd Byrd was the one to force the pace and Royal Play went after him while Flippant after racing third on the back stretch va3 cased back by Goodwin until for an instant he threatened to drop out of the running entirely Cantankerous was also being re ¬ served back of the leaders while Ceylon Prince was galloping along merely holding his place placeRoyal Royal Play was through when the stretch was reached and there Ceylon Prince had moved up until he was close after Byrd Can ¬ tankerous failed to respond but Goodwin was gaining with a rush on the inside with Flip ¬ pant He was lucky to find his way through on the inside and in a drive in the last six ¬ teenth the threeyearold outstayed the geld ¬ ing to be the winner by a head when Ceylon Prince bore out under punishment Byrd was eight lengths back of the first two and a scant half length ahead of Cantankerous CantankerousThere There came still another score for the Wheatley Stable when James Fitzsimmons sent Diavolo to the post for the four and a half furlongs dash for juveniles that was the second offering This son of Whisk Broom II Vexatious is one of several that were selected from the Harry Payne Whitney yearlings last year and in this only his third racing effort he showed becoming courage and a quality that may carry him much further along toward fame He outgamed the Sagamore Stables Scotch and Soda with Hypnotism and Hogans Alley the Miami star following in remarkably close order orderWhen When Johnny Maiben brought Walter J Salmons Punjab home an easy winner of the mile and an eighth fifth race he was given a round of applause He rode in the Swift Purse on Powhatan and that was his first mount since his Maryland accident but Powhatan was not good enough to carry him to vicry On Punjab he had an oppor ¬ tunity to judge pace make his move at the right time and had the colt home an easy first firstIt It was to the stretch turn that Maiben made his move and the son of Brown Prince II moved up and when the stretch was reached he was showing the way with plenty in reserve In the run home he drew out until at the end he was five lengths clear Architect outfinished Priceman by a length for second place and Priceman proved to have enough left to down Mill wick while Botanic quit so badly he was being eased up at the end by Kummer
