MISSTEP READY FOR LATONIA DERBY . « Gallops Kile Over Muddy Track in 1:45 and Appears in Fine Fettle — Hiram and Easter Stockings Announced as Probable Starters ♦ LATONIA, Ky., June 20. — Misstep, Leo J .Marks Fairmount Derby winner and one of the leading candidates for Saturdays forty sixth running of the 5,000 added Latonia Derby, had further preparation for that race when he galloped a mile in 1:45 over a muddy track here this morning. The son of Upset was well in hand throughout and, under a considerable impost, was timed in :25 for the first quarter, :50 for the half and 1:16% for three-quarters. The trial was easily the bast of the morning and proved nothing like a severe task for the colt. He came out of the work in splendid condition and trainer Mo3e Lowenstein, who supervised the move, was well pleased. Shortly after Misstep left the track, Danny E. Stewart brought out J. N. 5 Camdens Hiram and surprised by the announcement that the colt probably will be a Derby starter. Hiram was worked one mile and a quarter and completed the long course in 2:16%. Breaking at the quarter pole, he covered the first quarter in :26, the half mile in :53, three-quarters in 1 :20% and the mile in 1 :48. Hirams last race, when he finished second to Rolled Stocking in the Enquirer Handicap, was such a good one that both owner Camden and trainer Stewart believe him fully entitled to a chance at Derby honors. K. B. McLeans Toro, another of the leading candidates for the race, was sent a half mile in :50. He was galloped well in hand and went the quarter in :25 and three-eighths in :37%. Mop Up, an unlikely Derby starter, also owned by Mr. Marks, was worked over a distance of one mile in 1 :55%. Kay Spence, trainer of the Audley Farms good filly Faster Stockings, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, this morning reiterated his intention of starting her in Saturdays Derby. She will be coupled with Bobashela, the Audley colt trained by Miller Henderson that is due here from Fairmount Park Thursday morning. As jockey Russell has experienced much success astride Faster Stockings, he probably will ride her in the Derby, while W. Crump will have the mount on Bobashela. Farl Pool has been engaged to ride the Fair Acres Genial Host in the Independence Handicap here on July 4, and in the Jefferson Hotel Handicap, the closing day feature at Fairmount Park.
