GOSSIP OF THE TURF. At a meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club held at tke Brooklyn Jockey Club course Jane 15, with Mr. August Belmont it was ordered that jockey W. Morris and trainers James Underwood. Alexander McDaniel. Edward H. Purcell and Bennett Barnes were reatored to all privileges on courses racing under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club. The applications for reinstatement lodged by jockeys John Sullivan and James Murphy and trainers i F. D. Weir. William Beckett, John Croker, , Arthur Worley, H. James Smith, J. H. Bennett, John Bide;, Charles A. Reynolds and James i Carver were denied. The application of H. i i Mendelsohn 1 for reconsideration of the decision rendered in the Kleppsr case was denied. i After a long drawn out investigation tbe I, stewards of the Coney Island Jockey Club have relieved Jockey Maher of the imputation of fraudulent riding on Bana9tar in the Suburban, | their official decision in the matter reading as follows : "In the matter of Jockey Daniel Mahers conduct while riding the horse Banastar in the Suburban Handicap on June 17, 1899. we, the stewards of tbe Coney Island Jockey Club meeting, would report that we fined Maher 00 for abusing tbe horse and suspended him for ten racing days for wilfully spoiling starts. In tbe matter of intention of fraud on the part of Maher, after investigation, we would report that we were unable to discover any such intent." Winning owners at the recent Gravesfnd meeting were led by W. H. Clark with a total of 3,215 to his credit, Banastars Brooklyn Handicap figaring largely in the total. Other owners whose horses won ,500 or more were as follows: George E. Smith, 2,615; C. Fleisch-msnns Sons, 1,100: H. E. Leigh, 0,925; Oneck 8table, ,545; Green B, Morris. ,320; Eastin and Larabie, ,030; M. F. Dwyer, ,985; J. Boden, ,860: P. J. Dwyer, ,700; J. R. and F. P. Keene, ,570: J. J. Hyland, ,535; J. E. Mc Donald, ,360; Sydnpy Paget. ,360; Kensico Stable, 900; J. E Madden, ,870; J. Daly, B2,655, and A. H. and D. H. Morris, ,620. Secretary Harry Knhl, of the Chicago Jockey Club, and Secretary Martin Nathaneon, of the Harlem Jockey Club, will Boon be ready to announce the Fcurth of July racing features for their respective tracks. A long distance steeplechase will be the main item at Hawthorne, while a mile and a baif or two miles flat race will probably be the Btar event at Harlem. Seme , alterations in the steeplechase course at Hawthorne are to ba made conducive to its greater safety. No doubt there will be ou the national holiday patronage in abundance end to spare for both courses. Treasurer J. H. Bradford, of the Coney Island Jockey Club, gave out some figures as to attendance during the present meeting Monday afternoon. The crowds have been larger than I in the history of the club. The total attendance on Suburban day was 29,900, which, according to recorded figures, is the greatest I crowd that ever gathered at a metropolitan track. More than 16,500 persons attended last Saturday afternoon. Truelight. who fell in the two-mile race at : Latonia, Saturday, and had to be destro ed, was a five-year-old mare by Troubadour— Sunlight, belonging to W, M. Bosler, who purchased ■ her from S. S. Brown. She fell almost t at the same spot where Madrilene went down 1 two years ago with Jockey Joe Hill in the 1 saddle, the fall well nigh ending his riding career. Tuesdays Morning Teh graph says: "There 5 were two notable absentees in the lines of book makers yesterday - Biley Grannan and Joe , Ullman The game had gone against them at 1 Sheepshead Bay, and they could no longer stand I the pace. Ullmaus retirement marks the end 1 of the syndicate book which has been taking t sensational bets ever since the beginning of I the season." Word comes from Saratoga that the two ■ foruia horses, Rey del Tierra and St. Elizabeth, are dead. They contracted lung fever while on 1 their way east.
