HARLEM FAVOBITJB8 SCORE, I There was plenty of weather at Harlem yesterday. The air went from mng y heat to the chill of a strong wiud which had the kind- neas to drive ihe wet oat of the track and make I the footing and the racing more reliable. There I was a slow course early, but the last three races I were ran over a good track and at the finish it was fast enough fjr old Meddler to run three-quarters of a mile in 1 :14, The Meddler race was the feature of the day and over his win the ring got a sharp drubbing. The old fellow is at his best just now and he and Rutter are in the public eya. The Ting figured that Aba Farst would beat Meddler and rcade him favorite at about 6 to 5. Meddlers price was always around 2 to 1 and he got the bulk of the public play. The race was a mild one. Meddler came sauntering amid a stand-shaking yell after Butter had beaten the barrier with him and won all the wey. Abe Furst and Moroni had a hard fight for the place, the latter getting it by a mere head. It was Meddlers fourth consecutive win. Tbe conditions of the fourth race, at one mile and seventy yards, let Hugh Penny in with 99 pounds, and as E?bart, with 113, was the next best horse, it looked as though Penny had fallen into a soft spot. He had, was a 1 to 3 chance and won rather handiiy. Had Egbart been able to get through on the stretch turn, however, the result might have been different. Bloes. who rode Egbart, started through oa the rail, but Nutt and Dupee cloEed in on him and he was obliged to puli up and go around. Out of the first race, a five farlong affair for two-year aids, came a close finish. Frangible, Talma, Lomond and Barrack were close together and all in a heap at the end. Frangible got the verdict but Barrack and Lomond were both better than he. Sempsr Eadem, with S2 pounds up, was heavily played to win the aecond race, at ono mile and a sixteenth. He won right hand-Bomely. Breaking sixth, he at once went to the front, and setting a pace to snit himself, won easing up. Frad Barr ran a fair race. The third event was an easy thing for News-gatherer. After Graz ella had rained herself by stepping the first half in 431 seconds, the son of Enquirer— Bonnie Meade went to the front and sauntered home five lengths to the good. Five two-yaar-olds made up the field in the fifth race and Nullah, the 7 to 5 favorite, won handily from Inlok. The winner, a filly with a lot of speed, seems unable to go over four and half furlongs and win. Hardy Durham with twelve horses and Jockey J. Mathews got in yesterday. Keene k Byan have purchased three UBeful two year-olds. They are Talma, Lord Weir and Pallas. "Brown Dick- and J. Carroll are recent arrivals. The former has a string of ten. 1 I, |
