UPSETS AT II VWTHORNE. Hawthorne had a rousing big cro-d 3atur- day and the visitors were treated to all kinds of sensations in the way of racirg variations. There were long shots that won, horses that fell, Mr. Dwyer made his worst start of the year, and at the wind-up came a banner "form reversal." All this kept the crowd keyed up to the high- 1 est pitch, and the returning trains were crowded j to the limit with perhaps one of the best 1 natnred throngs that ever left a racetrack. la the second race, where Btarter Dick Dwyer had all his trouble, and after it was run Dick, who is generally the best natured man 1 around, was on the war path, and his big, good- -naturd face resembled the setting of the sun 1 after an extremely hot day. It was not Dwyers 1 fault entirely that the horses were kept at the post for nearly an hour, but it was his mistake that after such a long delay Florizar, Juggler II. and Red Gdd were left at the post. There were bat nino starters in the race but the entire nine seamed to be bad actors, and to make matters worse six of them were ridden by practically green jockeys, Burns, Mitchell and Titit e being the only boys that seemed to have any control over their horses and they were , lo jking for the beat of it. The consequence waB that starter Dwyer lost all patience after fooling around with the bunch for fifty five minutes and lot them go with Tulla Ft neo first, Montgomery second, and Malaise third. These were , the thraa, too, that were ridden by experienced t jockoys. Tulla FonBO went to the quarter about two lengths in front but down the backstrotch Montgomery took the lead end held it to the 8tretch. Here Tulla Fonso challenged him and in a fierce drive beat him by a narrow margin. After paesing the wire Vititoe hit Mongomery over the head with Iub whip several times and for doing so the judges fined him 5 after owner "Billy" Magrane had made a complaint. The steeplechase was a very eventful one. Mr. Corrigans Colonel Bartlett, who won so impressively when last out, was a stanch favorite but there seemed to be no one that wanted to back him and he W6nt back in the betting from 6 to 5 to 8 to 5. Evidently the ten pounds the gelding picked up from his last race was too much for him for he was last at the finish. Three Forks won the race after he had interfered with every other horse more or lots, and Gypceiver wa3 second. The latter horse finished directly in behind Three Forks and so close was he that in the V6ry last stride he struck ogaicat Three Forks and foil. Whan he went down, however, he was under the wiro and consequently had to be officially placed second. Hop Scutch started the ball rolling by winning the first race easily afcer biiug backed from 15 to 1 down to 8 to 1. This gelding is royally bred, being by Hanover Glen Belle, and has shown speed in all his races, but he has the reputation of being a quitter and it was for this reason that such a long price was laid against him. He got away in front and leading all the way won easily. Uncas was favorite for this race bat he finished outside of the money. Nutt rode him and the judges suspended him pending an iuvestixation. Uucas always has 1 been a coward and it saeined that Nutt got as i much out of him as any other jockey would bo , likely to. I I King Bermuda knockod the form players silly when ho won the last race vtry easily. The i King started in the laBt race Friday and could I uot outrun a fat man, but in this race ho hud 1 speed galoro and rau a gooa race. For hi tud-den . awak-ning J. R. Hud and his Btablo are suspended pending an investigation. To King Bermuda Jackanapes finished tocond and Tap-pan ttiird. 1 j 1 1 1 1 A field of good class horses went to the post for the mile and stventy yards race, which was run fifth, and naturally speculation on it was very brisk. Jolly Roger, with Tommy Burns up, closed a slight favorite, and after being beautifully ridden he won like a good colt from John Bakpr and Hard Knot. Macy, heavily backed, did not run up to expectations and finished fifth. Cherry Leaf, who perhaps did not like the track and was mildly ridden, finished fourth. This little horse looks fine and should win as soon as he bits a hard track. "Virginia" Bradley either has a sulker or a very ecc6utric horsa in Kings Highway. At any rate, the gelding runs tome queer races. He was badly beaten for his last two starts but at 13 to 1 he won trie third event Saturday, in a sensational way. Conley rode him and until the stretch was reached he was never better than eighth. Than he took a notion to run and tearing through the stretch like a mad horse won off by a couple of lengths.
