1 AMERICAN DERBY TRIALS. Sam Phillips worked at Washington Park yesterday morning the full Derby distance in 2 :37"-r„ carrying 122 pounds. George Walker, the trainer, instructed the boy Poat, who rode him. to rate along evenly and do the mile and a half inabout2:3K. The fractional time was, 255,39. 5t . 1 :02, 1 :17, 1 :30i, 1 :44 1 , 1 :56, 2 :10, 2 :23i, 2 :37-.v The colt pulled up well and strong. The two-yar-old Alard Scheck accompanied him through the last half mile. W. M. Barrick reached Washington Park at noon yesterday with his Derby candidate James, bringing along a yearling he had recently purchased as company for the colt. James bore the journey well, and was full of play on landing. Mitchell, who will ride him in the Derby, came with the party. Green Morris worked Silver Garter and the two-year-old Schoolmaster easily together, and later had out Pupil. He say- he will start Pupil in the Derby, and perhaps Silver Garter. Barrack, at Harlem yesterday, with 122 pounds up and McDermott in the saddle, was sent a mile and a half in 2:38;, though some watches made it much faster, some as low as 2:36. The colt moved well and will be shipped to Washington Park to-day. Taral will arrive in Chicago on Thursday and will ride Advance Guard in the Derby.
