JJM1NEZ TAKES A STAKE. Lovers of racing who journeyed to Hawthorne yesterday to see the horses run certainly got their moneys worth. There were seven ©vents carded, but one, the first, had to be run over the second time, making practically eight races in one afternoon. In Chicago racing ie now at its height, and with such an attractive card as was offered at Hawthorne yesterday it is no wonder that big crowds turn out; still an attendance of 6.000 on Monday is far above the average, and in fact was above all expectations of the association, as can be seen by the fact that the programs were disposed of before the second race. An extraordinary incident marked the first race in the way of a false start. It was for two-year-olds at five furlongs and there were twelve starters. At the first break Starter Holtman made a motion to throw his flag but seeing the field was badly strung out with Edith Q. and Esther Riggs standing flat-footed he changed his mind and yelled to the jockeys who broke away "pull up." "pull up." None of them seemed to hear this and as the man holding the advance flag dropped his bunting the boys naturally thought it was "a go" and raced away at top speed. Invictus led well into the stretch where Rio de Altar challenged him and in a bruising finish won by a neck. Starter Holtman turned back to the stand and informed the judges that he had not thrown his flag and consequently it was no start. The only thing that was left to be done then was to send the field hack to the post to run the route over aain. This the judges did but they made a mistake in allowing any of the jockeys to dismount, or in letting the horses go to the paddock. After the false break Edith Q. and Esther Riggs had all the best of it and the price against them naturally shrunk many points. When going to the post before the false start, Edith Q. was quoted at I to 1 and Esther Riggs at 15 to 1, but after the false break the former was held at 9 to 5. while 4 to 1 was the best odds to be had against Esther Riggs. In the race proper Edith Q. got away third, but immediately went to the front and with the greatest of ease won by four open lengths. Esther Riggs was not so fortunate and after getting away seventh, was sharply interfered with and almost fell and this ruined whatever chances she had and Wilson eased her up. The Clyde Stakes for two-year-olds was the racing fixture, and it furnished one of the most thrilling contests to look ai that was ever run over the Hawthorne track. There were only-four starters and they were sent away, and in fact ran to the head of the stretch, so close together that a single blanket would have covered the quartet. Straightened away for home, however. Jiminez with Caywood up worked his way to the front gradually, eventually winning by an open length. The early pace in this race was terrific, the first quarter being run in 234 seconds, the three-eighths in 34i. and the half in 474. This naturally made the youngsters tire at the end and they were going at a Mails pace. That grand looking stake horse Pink Coat, made Kva Rice and Jolly Roger look cheap in t lie fifth event, and at the royal price of 1 to 2 came home first under restraint. The mile and a quarter hurdle went to Passe Partout. who has always shown speed through the field but a disposition to stop. This route was to the weldings liking, and as he is a good, safe jumper, he had little or no trouble in winning. Pat Dunne started Benalder and he was the hottest thing of the day. being backed from 4 to I down to 9 to ." . This good looking son of Riley fenced poorly, though, and finished a distant fourth. Nothing out of the ordinary happened in any of the other races with the exception of the last, in which Abe Furst, with T. Knight up, fell. Neither jockey nor horse was hurt, and the big crowd want home well pleated with the afternoons sport.
