FAYORITES IN FBONT. Hunter Raine, which ran third in the Young Handicap and which should have finished second with a good ride, beat Lucien Appleby with ridiculous ease at Washington Park yesterday in the fourth race, a dash of one mile and twenty yards. He opened at 2i to 1 in the betting, but was backed down to 6 to 5 by post time. Bronze Wing set a fast pace for the first six furlongs, but when well turned for home Helgesen, on Hunter Raine. called on his mount and the colt easily shot to tha front, winning with consummate ease by seven lengths from Lucien Appleby, which beat Bronze Wing two and a half for second place. Lucien Appleby ran a dull race and showed but scant speed. He has probably trained off, as he ran nowhere near the true form he is known to possess when good. The days opener proved an easy thing for Wa-swift, which ran to his best form and simply made the field look cheap. He led from start to finish, winning eased up by a length from Bragg, which finished two before Martin Burke for second place. Ficquart showed speed for a half mile. Autumn Leaves ran far below her best form and was never . a serious contender. Yincennes took the. second race easily by two lengths from Star Cotton, which beat EdAdack four for second place. Eva Bice led by a fair margin up to the turn for home where she quit suddenly, Star Cotton assuming what appeared to be a winning lead, but in the last eighth Vincennes closed up fast and passed him without much trouble. Hans Wagner ran well for six and a half furlongs. Satin Coat ran a disgracefully bad race, being virtually beaten off from start to finish in going to his liking. Stem Winder virtually ran away from the field of twelve two-year-olds in the third race, a dash of five furlongs. An Revoir got off flying, but Stem Winder passed him without much of an effort in the first sixteenth and, displaying a keen turn of speed, was never afterward headed, winning by two and a half lengths from Gregor K., which beat ! Watoma three for second place. Gregor K. had no mishaps and ran to his best form. Watoma closed np ground in the last quarter. An Revoir was well spent just after making the turn for home. Top-soil ran an indifferent race. He began slowly, but moved up fast in the last sixteenth. It was nowhere near the form he is known to possess. Ciales fairly spreadeagled the field in the fifth race, winning in a big canter by five lengths from Orla, which beat Sardine two for second place. It was virtually a three-horse race all the way, the others never being serious contenders.! The finale was taken by Winter, which was lucky to get through in the last sixteenth. She laid along in about sixth position for the first half and then moved up fast, finishing with a rush and stalling off Pompinos bid in tha last sixteenth with determination. Winter won handily by a length, while Pompino beat Evelyn Byrd three lengths for second place. Little Gem showed a keen turn of speed for four and one-half furlongs, but fell away beaten when the pinch came. Ordnung appeared to have a winning chance in the last eighth, but was pinched against the inside rail and had to be pulled up. Preetorius showed scant speed and was beaten off all the way. The usual large crowd was on hand and witnessed a good days sport. The track favored mud runners in the first two races, but after that dried out fast and was in pretty fair shape by the time the days sport was over.
