Headwater appeared to have a chance in the last furlong, but tired badly when the last sixteenth struggle came np. Silurian ran a dull race and can do better. Nickey D. was never a serious contender. MacLaren was much the best of the others and fenced without the slightest mistake. Wenlock tired fast after taking the last jump. The rider on Lord Farandole was thrown up high into the air, in taking the eighth jump, and lost some ground by landing almost at a standstill. Won handily after a last sixteenth drive: second easily. John Bright ran a high class race. He was not called on until well into the stretch, where, under a vigorous ride he moved up steadily and caught McChesney in the last thirty yards, from which point to the wire he always held him safe. McChesney ran a sparkling good race and appeared the winner when a furlong out, but could not quite concede the weight to so good a horse as the winner is at present. Joe Frey showed great and sudden improvement and did not hang so palpably as he did when called upon in his last race. He stood a long stretch drive with gameness and just got up in time to nip Scarlet Lily on the post. The latter ran to her best form, but she tired rapidly when the pinch came. Hunter Raine made up ground in the last qnarter, finishing on the outside. Flying Torpedo was well spent after turning into the last quarter. Haviland was right there for a mile and a sixteenth. Nitrate s race was a disappointment. He fell away badly beaten after showing speed for six furlongs. He can do better. Scratched 345013Argregor, 121 ; 344803Hargis, 93 ; 34455 Searcher, 105. Toah ran Thurles into early submission and then took what appeared to be a commanding lead, but in the last sixteenth Harry New, under a vigorous drive, came strongly, causing Winkfleld to drive him out in the closing strides. Harry New ran to his best form and responded gamely under punishment. Talpa ran an unaccountably poor race, falling away gradually beaten after the first half had been run. Little Elkin ran right to the mark of his recent consistent form. He made up much ground in the last quarter and finished resolutely, going away at the end. Ravensbury tired perceptibly when challenged by the winner. The saddle slipped on him and this may have been the cause of his defeat. Blessed Damozel showed much speed and was right there to the last sixteenth, where she began to tire fast. Lizella ran in much improved form and plainly showed she needs a fast track to run to her best form. Edith Q. ran well for over a mile. Compass ran below expectations, as also did Brutal. Overweights Ravensbury, 2 pounds. Little Elkin, show, 2 to 5. Ravensbury, show, evens. Blessed Damozel, show, 6 to 1.
