SCINTII.Ii ANT II.S GEE AT BACK The Harlem Jockey Club certainly registered a red-letter day yesterday at its beautiful racing plant in Proviso. A crowd numbering close to 17,000 persons filled every available space in the grandstand, betting ring and esplanade, and between the races the spectators were allowed to go into the infield. The card was one of the best offered here this year and resulted in a splendid exhibition of the thoroughbred at his best. No track in America was ever faster than the Harlem track yesterday and several records one of them an American record were broken. The drawing attraction of the card was the Twentieth Century Stakes, a handicap for three-year-olds and upward, at one and three-sixteenths miles with ,000 added. Of the thirteen scheduled to start, five were absentees, but the adding of Jim-inez with 106 pounds up brought a fiold of nine to the post. The Hildreth entry, consisting of Mc-Chesney and Searcher, was made a prime favorite at even money. Neither was ever a serious contender in the race, the winnerturning up in Scin-tillant II. against whose chances as good as 15 to 1 could be had. fThe distance was accomplished in 1 :57t6, which was 1 seconds faster than the previous track mark and 17-20 of a second faster than the American mark of l:58i made by Boanerges at Washington Park in 1898. After a delay of twelve minutes at the postDwyer got the field off to a good start, with Jiminez in front, closely pressed by Scarlet Lily and Pink Coat. Passing the stand for the first time Jiminez led by a neck from Scarlet Lily, which was two and one-half lengths before Pink Coat, on which Joe Frey and McChesney were lapped, with the rest of the field bunched and close up. Going down the backstretch Jiminez increased his lead to two and one-half lengths, with little change in the position of the others, except that Nitrate had displaced Pink Coat in third position. Turning for home Jiminez still maintained an advantage of a length over Scarlet Lily, with Pink Coat third, but Nitrate fell away beaten and Scin. tillant II. moved up in fourth place. When well straightened for home Pink Coat moved up fast on even terms with Jiminez. and for a moment the race appeared to be between the two. but about the last eighth Winkfield called on Scintillant II., which responded with a rush, and quicker than it can be told the horse passed Pink Coat and Jiminez with consummate ease, winning in a big romp by four lengths from Jiminez, which beat Scarlet Lily one and a half for second place. Jiminez ran an excellent raco and carried his marvelous speed much farther than usual. He also stood the keen pressure of the last sixteenth struggle with gameness. Scarlet Lily ran to her best form and tired only in the last eighth. Pink Coat tired rapidly whon the pinch came and was undoubtedly a shade short. McChesney ran a listless race and was nover a serious contender. Nitrate was a keen contender for seven furlongs. Joe Frey ceased to be a serious contender after seven and a half furlongs had been run. Rose Tree took the fifth race, a dash of one mile, in a fierc drive by a nose from Toah. which boat Alard five lengths for second place. T. Walsh put up a careless ride on Toah, which should have won. Bose Tree turned the mile in 1 38;, which is sevon-fiftoenths or a second faster than the mark set by Libertine at the same track some years ago. The days opener proved an easy thing for St. Cuthbert, which ran to his best form, Ho boat LEtrenno by one lsngth, the latter finishing a head before Zyra for second place. Gypzone took the second race by a neck from Watoma, which beat Blue Miracle one for second place. Dagmar was much the best in the steeplechase, winning in a big romp by four and a half lengths from Old Fox, which finished twenty before Mystic Shriner for place. Meddler fell about thirty feet from the wire when ho had third place assured. Burnie Bnnton easily took the sixth race from Federal by two lengths, with Brnlare third, and the seventh went to Frank M by a head from Scotch Plaid, with Lady Chorister third. Jockeys Helgesen, Winslett and Donnelly were fined 0 each for cutting across and interfering with Toah on the far turn in the fifth race. Secretary Nathanson-has announced a cup race over the usual distance of two and a quarter miles, 0 each, with ,000 added, entries to close September 9, and the race to be run September 10. John Bright pulled np" lame in his work, causing his owners to scratch him in the Twentieth Century Handicap. McChesnoy was purchased by Durnell and Horn yesterday for the reported price of 7,000. The sale was consummated before the Twentieth Century Stakes, in which he started, was run, but the new owners were to take possession of him afterward.
