GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Concerning the regrettable financial difficulties of the Spirit of the Times Daily America of Thursday says: "The fact that the seventy-two-year-old Spirit of the Times and Sportsman has been petitioned into bankruptcy was doubtless a surprise to many who were not acquainted with its affairs. It has been weak financially for a long time, chiefly through uncollectable debts. The present move, it is stated, is to clear up all troubles of whatever nature, but there is no possibility that the publication will cease. A. F. W. Leslie, who has been its manager for the past five years, and who has now been appointed receiver, took charge under adverse circumstances, and had succeeded in placing the paper on its feet, when unknown notes and debts came rolling in to such an extent that in paying the same it greatly crippled the resources. Mr. Leslie says the present proceedings will in no wise interfere with the continuance of the old publication, and that it will be issued as usual this week. Just what will be the outcome rests upon the decision of tb5 courts."
