GOSSIP OF THE TUKF. The race mare Frances Reis died at Latonia Wednesday morning of hydrophobia. It required the combined efforts of a dozen stable hands to strap the suffering brute down in her stall, and in her dying struggle it was necessary to spike chains around her so that she could not break loose. The filly showed symptoms of the dread disease for the first time only a day or so ago, and her owners, Baker and Co., are at a loss to know what caused tho animal to go mad. Frances Reis was a gray fiilly four years old. She was raced as a two-year-old by Lee Smitha, and showed remarkable speed. Dick Welles, the crack two-year-old that defeated Savable at Chicago, is a bit the worse for wear 2T" Morris Park. He caught cold last Saturday from being galloped in a drizzling rain and cooled out too quickly. Friday he was nearly all right again, but the setback may prevent him starting at Westchester. The New York public had hoped to see the King Eric colt pitted against some of the best of his age yet in training. His only two remaining stake engagements are the Autumn Serial Handicap for all ages on Thursday next and the White Plains Handicap for two-year-olds on the last day of the meeting. While he may keep one or both of these, trainers at the track will be agreeably surprised if he does. Ten yearlings from the Faustiana stock farm, sired by Faustus and Free Knight, were sold at auction in the paddock before the races Monday. The complete sale and prices follow: Bay filly, by Faustus Belle Broock, to E. J. Arnold and Co., 00; bay colt, by Free Knight Petticoat, Dnrnell and Herz, 25 ; bay colt, by Free Knight Viola Ban, Dnrnell and Herz, 50; bay colt, by Free Knight-Lillian, Dnrnell and Herz, 75; chestnut filly, by . Faustus Cora Knight, James Curl, 25; bay filly, by Free Knight Sarah Davis, Curtis and Dernham, 50; bay filly, by Free Knight Nilety, T. H. Ryan, 00; bay filly, by Free Knight Fauna III., Curtis and Dernham, 50 ; bay filly, by Free Knight Columbia, James Arthur, 50; bay filly, by Free Knight Zella, James Arthur, 50. Fourteen of the thirty yearlings belonging to H. M. Ziegler, the Cincinnati turfman and theatrical manager, in the stable of Dan OBrien, were tried out at the Kentucky Association track at Lexington Tuesday in the presence of their owner and Mb regular trainer, Charley Hughes. They were all sent a quarter of a mile. The ,0C0 brother of Lady Schorr worked the fastest, in 231 seconds, but he only had 100 pounds up, so his performance was not so impressive as that of the gray colt, by Faraday Altivola, which ran the distance in 231, or the brother to Clorita, which stepped in 24, both the latter yearlings having 118 pounds up. Of the fillies. Pristina, by Henry of Navarre St. Priscilla, did tho best with 118 pounds up, she running in 231. One remarkable feature of the days workout was tho fact that every one of tho fourteen that were speeded ran a quarter in 24 or better. Ziegler has taken a fancy to the yearling chestnut colt by The Commoner Rosa Maso, owned by John Welch, ex-owner of Trinity Boll, and will likely open negotiations at once for his purchase, as J. A. Drake is also after the youngster. He saw the colt break the track record for the year, running a quarter in. I 221 with 118 pounds up. It is paid Welch has rnced hirtt at 0,000.
