, ; NEW TOKand TURF TALK. In its review of eastern racing affairs of passing 1 internst the Hun of Monday says : S3?3CC -- With the close of the Westchester meeting the racegoing public considers the real season on the 1 turf in this state at anend, for the reason that in times past the rich owners have always sent their horses away to winter quarters with the last note of the bugle at Morris Park. But during the next two weeks at the Queens County Jockey Clubs track at Aqueduct there will be a higher class of racing than ever before, partially because of the increase in the value of stakes and purses and also because the Aqueduct track, with its many improvements in the way of new accommodations for the public, has grown so much in popular favor that it is no longer a hardship to run a horse there. The stakes to be run at this meeting are especially attractive, both in point of value and conditions. No purse will be less than 00 in value, while the stakes and handicaps will average ,000 each in added money. "Tho Creedmoor Stakes for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs will be the magnet on Wednesday. Plater, which established a new worlds record for this distance at Morris Park last week, will probably go to the post, together with such youngsters as Bosetint, Lady Albercraft, Skilful, Minotaur, Counterpoise, Boutonniere, W. B. Condon, Miladi Love, Mackey Dwyer, Cinquevalli, Sparkle Esher, Blue Peter and others. The Edgemere Stakes for all ages, weight for age, one mile and a furlong, to be run on Thursday, may bring together Hermis and Advance Guard, both of whom are eligible. A race between these turf stars just now would serve as one of tho best attractions of the year and would create unbounded enthusiasm, as botli horses are the most popular in the east. Should they go to tho post they might have for company St. Finnan, Stamping Ground, Hnrstbourno, Boyal, Dr. Biddle and Potento. "On Friday the Lynbrook Handicap for two-year-olds at six furlongs is carded with Plater, Lady Albercraft, Forward, Bight and True, Bosetint, Courtmaid, Toscan, Orloff, Skilful, Minotaur, Boutonniere, Examiner, Miladi Love, Mackey Dwyer, Nevermore, Joe Cobb, Bed Knight, Muzio and Eva Bussell among the probable starters. The Babylon Handicap for all ages at seven furlongs will be decided on Saturday with a good field to be drawn from the following: St. Finnan, Anak, Bellario, Skilful, Daly, Boyal, Moor, Bemorse. Belle of Lexington, Mackey Dwyer, Nevermore, Contjnd, Bed Knight, Ordnung, Maud Gonne, Sadducee, Carbuncle, Sparkle Esher and Oom Paul. The Aqueduct track, by the way, was never faster. Sapt. Joe Beilly has been working at it for some timo past until he has got things in shape for a series of track record-breaking performances. Last week it was a common thing for a horse to work a mile in 1 :40. The Queens County Jockey Club has also provided additional stable room in view of the increase in tho number of owners who have decided to remain over until the coming meeting ends. "While there was an unusual amount of advorso criticism of the Bport during the recent Morris Park meeting, and in an indirect way, hints against certain owners have been thrown out, involvng scandal, the fact remains that actual proof of wrongdoing in such cases is lacking. In a word charges of wrongdoing may be safely offset by plausible excuses which make it impossible to deal put severe penalties. It is frequently the case that hot headed individuals say such and such a jockey pulled or such and such an owner doped his horse ; or that such and such a trainer deadened a favorite so that a second choice at a good price might win ; but when it comes right down to cases, absolute proof is lacking. It is an easy matter to criticise and not at all difficult to ask why The Jockey Club does not rule off half a dozen riders and as many owners and trainers, but before any .such action could be taken, proof of guilt would have to be obtained. "The Jockey Club stewards have just revoked the licenso of jockey Louis Smith for alleged wrongdoing and he will not be allowed to ride again on any track, except, possibly, those in Chicago, where the rulings of the Eastern Jockey Club are not always recognized. From the ruling off of Smith, tho conclusion has been naturally drawn that others are implicated in the trouble and that the stewards will not cease tho present investigation until they have landed some big fish. Men who go to the racetrack for a livelihood have often heard i gossip to the effect that jockeys are mere puppets in the hands of several shrewd manipulators who i frame up jobs by which they may beat the betting ring, And tho gossip has been so persistently , spread that names have been mentioned. Pinker-; tons men have been looking into these yarns, it is understood, for some time and whatever they have learned has boen placed in the hands of the stewards. "The showing of Eugenia Burch in tho White Plains Handicap, when Bho took up top weight and finished nowhere, was explained by Starter Pettin-gill yesterday, who said tho filly propped herself just after the barrier went up and lost so much 1 1 ground that she never had a chance. Those who said the filly was tho best two-year-old of tho year after she had beaten Acefull and Grey Friar in the Champagne Stakes, though afterward disqualified, were inclinod to change their minds after Saturdays race. As tho crack two-year-olds go into winter quarters the question of supremacy remains in doubt. Grey Friar, Acefull, Eugenia Burch, Sava-ble. Moxican, Meltoniao, Plater, Irish Lad, Mizzen and others have done enough to completely tie up the situation so that no turf sharp cares to figure out a champion. "The attention of horsemen is called to the fact that a number of valuable stakes offered by the Brighton Beach Bacing Association will close on Saturday of this week. The events are the 0,000 Brighton Junior Stakes, the ,000 Neptune Stakes and the 5,0C0 Venus Stakes, all for two-year-olds and to be run in 1903, and the 0,G00 Brighton Derby, the ,000 Iroquois Stakes and the ,000 Brighton Oaks, all for three-year-olds and to be run in 1901. The Venus Stakes and tho Brighton Oaks are for fillies of their respective years. Entries should be addressed to the Bacing Secretary, Brighton Beach Bacing Association, 215 Montague Street, Brooklyn."
