TENNESSEE UEKlir AND OAKS. t In a note concerning two important stakes, that a few months hence will engross the attention of followers of the turf, Secretary M. N. Macfarlan of the New Memphis Jockey Club says: "Among those eligible to the Derby will be found some of the best two-year-olds of the year, the most notable of course is the Futurity winner. One important feature of tho Tennossoe Derby and Oaks is that there is no penalty or allowance in either, making both races for champion three-yoar-olds. The Tennessee Derby has never had the good fortune to have many good three-year-old9 eligible to start, and trainers as a rule seem opposed to preparing a horse for this event, yet Lucien Appleby and Aladdin were both raced at the Memphis meeting, and both were placed in the American Derby and proved to be two of the best campaigners of the year. The early preparation did not injure them. Tho Tennessee Oaks is a much more fortunate race, and the winner usually shows to be one of the best three-year-old fillies of the year. May Hempstead, Lady Schorr and Flora Pomona may be mentioned, and the Oaks for 1903 should be no exception as some of the best two-year-old fillies of 1902 are eligible. The Derby presents about the best list of entries it ever had, but of course the declarations in January will make quite a difference in both races. The Tennessee Derby will be worth about ,0C0, and the Tennessee Oaks about ,700." Owners are admonished to note the fact that second declarations from both stakes will, fall due January 1 nest. The present list of eligibles to both follows: The Tennessee Derby for 1903. Subscribed to by G. C. Bennett and Co.
