GOSSIP OF THE TURF. English turf writers are unanimous in their praise of the two-year-old filly Caravel, and as she will be seen in all the big three-year-old events, inciting the Derby and Oaks, next year, tho fact is signilicant just now. Caravel belongs to John Jub-bins, owner of Ard Patrick, this years Derby winner, and comes of real blue-ribbon stock. She is by Pioneer out of a Kendal mare, the latter a half brother to Ormond ahd sire of Galtee More, winner of the 1897 Derby. Not alone has the palm been awarded to Caravel Ifor the present season those who are competent to speak say that she but animal sean on the English tnrf inrmanylyears. A bright bay, she stands sixteen hands and has a tremendous striding power. Caravels first introduction to the public occurred at Hurst Park, where she won some small stakes in the early part of tho season. Her work in the Club Two-Year-Old at Windsor at once attracted attention, and was at once followed up by a decisive win in the Ditch Mile Nursery in first class company. But the dashing filly met her first defeat in the Downe Nursery at Liverpool only after she had been literally weighted to the ground. Carrying the welter burden of 131 pounds, she was joint favorite with St. Walston,to which she was conceding forty-four pounds. Lord Stanleys Wood Sorrel, to which Caravel conceded thirty-three pounds, won. Sir Walston was second and Part Malt, which was in receipt of twenty-one pounds, third and Caravel fourth. About four lengths covered the four horses. Mornington Cannon had the mount on Caravel. Ont of the first thirty races run at Ingleside, twenty favorites came home with the gold, besides several second choices and backed horses. It was a perfect carnival for the ground talent, and many of the heavy plungers made enough the first few days to keep them in betting funds for a month. The game has been very tough to date. Barney Schreiber was one of those that were lucky enough not to cut in for the first three days. Both of his other books, however, Frank Bain and "Virginia" Carroll, cot a scorching and were several thousand to the bad when the big bookmaker from Missouri appeared on the scene.
