GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Danny Maher, tho well known American jockey, who has been riding in England with marked success during the past season, returned hero last Friday on tho White Star steamer Celtic, and was welcomed at the pier by his father and other friends from Hartford. Maher wore a long, fur-lined overcoat and held an English bulldog by a chain. Maher declined to say how much his earnings were, but the amount has been conservatively placed at 0,000. "Tho season just closed," said the jockey, "has been very successful for me both financially and otherwise. Out of 435 mounts I rode 106 winners and wound up with the highest percentage of any rider. I will return to England in the spring and am under contract to Sir James Miller, Sir Daniel Cooper and Lord Cadogan, for whom I have riddon tho past season. I prefer to ride in Englpl.J, as there is moro money in it for mo. "No, it is not truo that I rode for King Edward for tho reason that I did not havo tho chance. X would havo jumpod at such an opportunity, but I was never even approachod on tho subject. Jones is tho kings jocknv, ind rW in tho rovl colore CONTINUED ON FOURTH PAQE. " j GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Continued from First Page. all the time. I had the privilege, however, of riding the best two-year-olds in England, Boxeand and Flotsam. On the former I won six races and on the latter two. Boxsand belongs to Sir James Miller. With him I won the Bedford Stakes, the Chesterfield Stakes, the Woodcott Stakes, the Champagne Stakes, the Coventry Stakes and the Dowhurst Plate. With Flotsam I won the Imperial Produce Stakes and the Middle Park Plato. On Cheers I won the 0,000 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown for the Duke of Devonshire. I also captured the International Breeders Stakos with Mr. Arthur James Babelais. I received splendid treatment from the English sportsmen and turf authorities." In regard to the cases of jockeys Beiff and Henry, Maher declined to make a statement, because, as he said, he did not know enough about the matter to form an opinion. He seemed to be in robust health and said that he was glad to get back home for Christmas and a good rest. Governor Bryan, attorney for Judge Perkins in the suit of Colonel Applegate against Judge Perkins, for possession of stock in the Latonia Jockey Club, filed a brief in the circuit court at Covington, Ky., last Friday, in which he states that there was no evidence that the defendant received from the plaintiff Applegate any pecuniary consideration for extending the time for the payment of notes due. It is further stated that an agreement by the creditor with his debtor to take less than his debt based on no other consideration than to relieve him of his pecuniary embarrassment, can not be enforced, considering the statement of the plaintiff that he owned only 5,000 of the stock he asks possession of, and that when the tender was made the plaintiff owed ,428 29 more than he offered. Judge Tarvin will this week stato the points that he desires the attorneys to discuss in -oral argument. C. B. Ellisons speedy two-yoar-old Lyman Hay is thought to have bowed a tendon, and will hardly be raced at New Orleans any more this winter. This colt ran a fair race in the Inaugural. Ellison had him well engaged in the local stakes.
