THE AMERICAN DERBY. A very great race deserves a very great entry list and that is what has been awarded the American Derby this year. It is the truly national race of this country for three-year-olds and its importance i, grows as the years roll by. In time it will be to the j, United States what tho Epsom Derby is to England. ic It is a source of just pride to the west, because it is the only race of the west that is preeminent. The east boasts of the greatest race for two-year-olds, the Futurity, tho greatest handicaps for three-year-olds and upward, the Brooklyn, Suburban and a Brighton, and in respect to weight for age races, h leads unapproached, but the supremacy of the li American Derby is unchallenged in the list of great re events for three-year-olds. This year the American Derby has 120 entries. - Last year it had 97. All sections of the country are represented. All the good two-jyear-olds of last year from the central west, the south and the Pacific slope are in. The east is worthily represented, giving the lie to the many-times printed suggestion that because Heno, The Parader, Her-mis and other eastern aspirants of recent years had failed to carry off the honors of the American Derby, eastern owners would give up essaying its capture. Mr. August Belmont is represented by his sterling son of Hastings, Lord of the Vale. Mr. F. R. Hitchcock has in Acefulls conqueror, Grey Friar. Mr. B. T. Wilson, Jr., has not been deterred by the ill success of The Parader from trying again with his two cracks Mexican and Qrantsdale. Messrs. Whitney and Duryea have entered their splendid colt Irish Lad. Philip J. Dwyer has nominated Merry Acrobat, and Claude, Trapezist, Mackey Dwyer, Standard Bearer and Ahola have been named to give battle in the colors of other eastern owners. Altogether it is demonstrated that the sportsmanlike spirit and grit that leads eastern owners to keep on trying for the honors of the greatest of British races is also operative in moving them to keep up their gallant endeavors to capture the star event of the American turf. This is as it should be and some bright June day in the future a vast Chicago crowd will give an eastern winner an ovation that will show how utterly non-sectional Chicago patrons of racing are. Leaving the Derby asidefor a moment the Washington Park Club is to be congratulated over a record-breaking list of entries. It is a case where figures speak more eloquently than words. Look at this list of entries for 190? as compared with figures of 1902: 1903. 1902.
