GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Maj. B. G. Thomas, tho veteran thoroughbred breeder, is dangerously ill at his home in Lexington, Ky. For a month his condition has been serious and last Monday night he took a turn for tho worse. With slight rallying at times he has been in a serious condition since. Major Thomas has no near relatives, but scores of devoted friends. He will leave an estate worth probably a quarter of a million dollars. . The plan suggested not long aeo by Cornelius Fellowes, secretary of the Coney Island Jockey Club, to further the interest in long distance racing has been taken up by nearly all the New York tracks. Beginning with the month of July, at least three overnight races of this kind will be run each week. The distances will bo from a mile and a half to two miles and a quarter, with from ,200 to ,5C0 in added money. The events will not be handicaps, but races at weight for age. at five, ten aud fifteen pounds under tho scale, selling affairs and events with penalties and allowances.
