Owing to the large and unwieldly field there was much crowding and interference at the start. Hortons gameness won for him. He went steadily throughout, having clear sailing and, coming with his customary stretch run, wore down the tiring leaders in the last quarter and won drawing away. Cunard was lucky and in a good position, moved up fast when straightened and seemed like winning when a furlong out, but suffered from a weak finish and raced in the deepest going from start to finish. Claude secured a lucky start, ran a game race, maintained his position with the leaders and sustained his speed like a coming stayer. Lord Badge, on the extreme outside, closed a big gap in the last half, finishing with a rush under a bad rider. Nones was unable to stride freely in the going, but was , wearing the leaders down in the last three furlongs. Dupont ran like a stayer. Durazzo was bumped at the start and tired after going the first mile. Siddons ran a bad race. Yellow Tail went a fast nine furlongs. Elliott got off badly, but ran disappointingly. Tower of Candles got away flatfooted, but closed up next to the inside rail and, being skillfully nursed, made good with a brilliant and unexpected stretch run and is evidently in great form, but dislikes this track. Ball Room Belle forced the pace throughout and finished out the last quarter gamely. Lizzie Rice appeared like winning on the stretch turn, but quit in the last furlong.
