He displayed superior speed from a poor start and spreadeagled his field. Nellie Hawthorne was lucky, and with clear sailing sustained her speed unexpectedly well. Anvil, badly ridden, was easily second best and finished fast. Helen Smith ran a fast half from a bad start. Phyllis is a non-stayer except in mud. Meehanus was skillfully handled, waited with in front and ran kindly all the way, and gamely stalled off strong challenges in the stretch. Champagne followed the winners pace closely throughout and was wearing him down at the end. Ignacio was possibly best. Away badly and poorly ridden, he closed up a tremendous gap in the last half and finished like a whirlwind. Alturas ran a good race. Stunts forced the early pace but was crowded back at the half, and again on the stretch turn, but flashed through next to the rail at the end and won going away. Andrew Ring was reserved to the stretch turn where he closed up with a rush. Donami tired in the stretch run, after disposing of Somenos in the first six furlongs. Somenos, probably not quite keyed up for the journey, has worked the distance a second faster than the race was run in and will do better. Figardon was outraced from the start.
