LONG SHOTS AT LAKESIDE. A crowd mnch larger than that of the day before, but still far from being up to the attendance that usually goes to Lakeside, was present yesterday and witnessed some good racing. Starter Dwyer was in excellent form and the send-offs were good in all races. Many were desirous of witnessing jest how Dan McKenna, J. C. Milams and Co.s American Derby hope, would perform in the fourth race, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds. He was pitted against a very mediocre field, but disposed of it so easily that many were impressed with the effort and a number of bets were registered on him in James OLearys winter book on the big Washington Park race. Glenrice was indulged in ke lead for the first quarter, but when well ightened down the backstretch Dan McKenna taken to the front, and he easily remained L to the end, winning by one length from Will H, which beat Chicago Girl one and a half for Klace. Will Sherry ran in improved form, Girl showed some gameness in a long drive Bthe stretch. Glenrice showed poorly and v in need of some racing. She is a pretty Ben at her vas somewhat wary about backing Kcond race, a dash of six furlongs for three.year-olds and upward, probably owing to the fact that he had not started in some time. It was whispered around that he was not entirely uo to a stiff race, but he gave the lie to the report by taking the lead at flag fall and remaining there to the end. He won much as his rider pleased by two and a half lengths from Cornwall, which beat Doeskin one for second place. Cornwall finished with a rush and was easily the best of the others. He cut his left front foot badly during the race. Optional, well backed by the talent, ran away twice in false breakaways, each time a half mile, which com pletely spoiled her chances. She was given an easy race when the barrier finally went up to a good start. The days opener, a four and a half furlongs scram, ble for two-year-old colts and geldings, proved to be a big surprise, Outfield, a rank outsider in the. betting, beating J. W. ONeill, the well backed 1 to 3 favorite. J. W. ONeill led for the first quarter but soon after the last quarter had been entered he began to tire fast, making it easy for Outfield to assume command. The latter won by one and a half lengths from I MuBt, which beat the fast-tiring J. W. ONeill three-quarters of a length for second place. J. W. ONeill has shown much early speed in his races thus far, but lacks staying powers. John J. Began was made an even money favorite in the second race, a six furlongs spin for three-year-olds and upward, but ran a very dull race, third being the best he could do. The winner proved to be Soothsayer the well-backed second choice, which won easily by three and a half lengths from James J. Corbett which beat John J. Began one length for second place. Another red hot favorite waB thrown down when Miss Flsischmann failed to finish inside the money in the fifth race, a four furlongs scramble for two-year-old fillies. Miss Callam led by a big margin until entering the last sixteenth where Lady Free Knight began to close up fast on her, but could not quite get up, the former getting her head over the line first with Pocassat third one length back. Old Mike won the last race, a mile dash for four-year-olds and upward, in easy fashion by four lengths from The Bobby which beat Limelight the same distance for second place. Owners at Lakeside desiring stalls at Worth should have their applications in by today, owing to the great demand. Application blanks can be had from the entry clerk at Lakeside. D. F. Cox arrrived at Lakeside yesterday from California with the horses Urchin, Sea Lion and Essence. Jockey C. Bell who is at present riding in California will arrive here shortly and ride for the Cox stable.
