Epicure, which is considered a certain starter in the Harlem National; G. W. Baldwin, with Huachuca, and P. C. Donaleche, who recently purchased Money Muss. E. Trotter secured yesterday a one years contract for the services of I. Rutter. The boy is a brother to Frank Rutter, and is a promising rider. A number of horsemen arrived yesterday from California with their horses. Among them were Curl Bros., H. J. Jones, J. Cochran, H. A. Cotton and J. H. Stevens. All, with the exception of the last named, are quartered at Hawthorne. Jockey W. Knapp, the midget rider, arrived yesterday from California and will ride for Curl Bros. Jockey Battiste came from St. Louis yesterday to ride Badger Girl in the stake race and returned last night to the Mound City. G. C. Bennett yesterday shipped his two-year-old Sanctum to Louisville, Ky., where he will start in the Nursery Stakes to be run Saturday. Jockey Coburn will in all probability leave for Louisville to ride the colt. C. F. Robbins has purchased from J. F. Newman the two-year-old filly I Must for the reported price of ,000, and she ran in his colors yesterday. It was rumored among the horsemen yesterday that G. C. Bennett had made an offer of ,500 to J. L. Slaughter for the filly Lucy E. S., which won the May Blossom Stakes. The offer was made while the youngsters were in the paddock before lining up to the barrier. The filly is by the Futurity winner Requital— Alma T., and has shown a great flight of speed in her work, several trainers having timed her five-eighths in 1:01 fiat.
