GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Sirs. Bessie L. Ferguson, widow of the late race horse starter, James B. Ferguson, and ex-proprietress of Kingston Stud, has arrived at Lexington, Ky., from California, to defend herself in a suit for ,500 filed by her daughter, Mrs. Elsie F. Chinn, wife of Phil Chinn, for services, rendered, so Mrs. Chinn claims, as bookkeeper for Mrs. Ferguson, when she was in possession of Kingston farm. The suit is to be called for trial during this week in the Fayette County Circuit Court. Mrs. Ferguson says she told her daughter if she had a good sale of her yearlings in the spring of 1902 she would give her ,500, but she denies she ever employed Mrs. Chinn at any promised salary. The latter failed to get the ,500, as Mrs. Fergusons sale last year resulted disastrously, and after three colts had been "sold for a song," the sale was declared off. W. Maide, a stable boy in the employ of M. Goldblatt, met with an accident at Louisville Saturday morning which will probably end his career on the turf. Maide was trotting the mare Atheola around the barn and she shied and unseated the lad. His foot caught in one of the stirrup irons, and, after being dragged about twenty yards, he was kicked on the chest and head a couple of times. He had two ribs broken. Maide was conveyed to St. Marys Hospital. First declarations from the Tennessee Derby and Oaks for 1904, were announced recently by Secretary Macfarlan, of the New Memphis Jockey Club. Thirteen of the original Derby nominations withdrew, as follows: G. C. Bennetts Julien Yale, S. S. Browns Falernian, Good Catch; E. Corri-gans unnamed Riley— Agnes II. colt; Dur-nell and Herzs Honest John and Elwood; C. R. Ellisons Fox Lake, Preakness, Esherson, J. P. Mayberry; S. C. Hildreths OMalley dead, and M. H. Tichenors Soldier of Fortune and Foresight Six withdrew from the Oaks, as follows: G. C. Bennetts Lady Thistle, Mabel Good; E. Corrigans Darebin— Camelia filly, Darebin— Edith filly and Rilda, and Waltring and Co.s Pretty Peggy. The first eastern sale of this season of racehorses will be held at Morris Park on Saturday next, the lGth. Mr. Sidney Paget consigns ten two-year-olds, among them the winners Valour, Florizel and Bombino, and others that are likely to win before the day of sale, which also includes the stake winners DeReszke, Rossignol, etc.
