Arian kept within striking distance while going up hill, went into the lead when half way down the stretch and held it gamely to the finish. Ohnet moved up simultaneously with the winner, but failed to take the last hurdle freely and this mistake probably cost him the race. He was pinned against the rail and going fast right at the end. Gould made the running and was benefited by the general waiting tactics of the field behind him, but tired at the end. McGrathiana Prince, outrun and sulking early, moved up fast when going up and around the hill, but failed to stay and ran a bad race. Seminole was a distant fourth when he fell over the last hurdle and not only lacked speed but fenced badly. Scratched— 35884 Ferocious, 136; 37967 Volantine, 133; 362083Cryptogram, 132. Jr. beat the barrier and made the most of his advantage, forcing a terrific pace and coming away with a rush at the end. King Pepper is a bad actor at the post and received much the worst of the start, but raced into prominence on the extreme outside and put up a game fight through the last quarter and was evidently much the best. Parisienne followed the winners pace closely and when straightened for home appeared like the winner. She held on well enough, but does not appear to have trained on from her two-year-old form. St. Sever closed a trmendous gap from a bad start finishing like a whirlwind and running a remarkably good race. Baikal, Petra II. and Andrattus were close up and going fast at the finish- Torchlight, nearJy teft, made up twenty lengths. Cassville was left and only cantered the journey. As expected, he went away from the port slowly and had to work a rough journey losing much ground, but was running past his horses at the end and must have been far the best. Odoms skill and vigor was again in evidence when he brought Boxwood home in front by the narrowest of margins. He held the rail throughout and the colt stood a long and terrific drive with superb courage. Masedo, better handled, would have won today. He appeared to have the race in hand all the way, but Larson was outridden at the end. He was probably beaten, however, by a better colt and one that will improve. Greencrest, running . on the outside, was closing up at the end like a whirlwind and must be a good one. Highball, away poorly and not dangerous at any time, was, however, gaining in the last quarter. Sir Carter, on looks, should improve greatly over todays showing. Scratched— 38903 Latheron, 110. Rene got away badly, but recovered quickly and gradually moved up on the outside, taking a slight lead until in the straight, where she came away with ease and at the weights was much the best. Anak was crowded back while on top of the hill and it was only when he struck the level track that he commenced to run kindly and made up ground fast. The Talisman brought up the rear for a brief spell and moved up very fast on the far turn and momentarily led the winner on the stretch turn, but quit suddenly and unexpectedly in the last sixteenth. Lady Knighthood made the early pace and was crowded back at the half and was again going well at the finish. Fonsolee went a good five furlongs. Scratched— 38730 Drummond, 101; 3S8823Kickshaw, 91. At post 3 minutes. Start fair. Won driving; second handily. Shorthose has trained on into genuine Derby material, received a lucky start and made a close first turn, was content to let Herbert make the running after that and when straightened for home he put up a brilliant and game stretch run, but was tiring at the end and was short. Herbert, carried wide on the first turn, raced into the lead on the backstretch and although passed in the stretch by the winner was wearing the three-year-old down at the end. Gold Van was reserved for seven furlongs and finished out the last quarter with a rare burst of speed and might have won but for a poor ride and being pocketed in the last furlong. Himself was lucky and waited on the pacemakers, putting up a fast effort on the far turn and only ceased to be a dangerous contender in the last hundred yards. Merry Acrobat was inadequately handled, but ran a game race and should improve. Andy Williams stumbled at the start losing many lengths, which gap he was unable to bridge. Cardinal Wolsey went a good seven furlongs. Scratched— 38931 Hunter Raine, 99. Overweights — Gold Van, 1 pound; Cardinal Wolsey, 2. Shorthose, show, evens. Herbert, show, 1 to 2.
