The Guardsman forced a fast pace and, increasing his lead at the end, showed unlooked-for 1 improvement. St. Finnan waited under a pull until a good opening offered, but lack of condition told in the long drive to the wire. Clorita raced on the outside of the field 1 throughout, which is a losing game at Gravesend. Futurita followed the winners pace 5 closely, only perceptibly failing in the last furlong. The Ragged Cavalier, with only a furlong to go, made up fifteen lengths with a rush winning in the final stride. Fulminate displayed his best form, led throughout by a wide margin although he ran out at the Liverpool, losing ten lengths, which he regained in a twinkling, only to be caught napping at the end. Plohn ran a game race after nearly cominfr to grief when Judge Phillips and Herculean fell. Lord Radnor went well for two miles Fred Ackerman finished bleeding from the nose and mouth. Lavator was one of the chief contenders when he fell at the end of the first mile. Judge Phillips and Herculean were running in the front division when they fell at the fourth jump. Winner— B. f, by Goldcrest— Tenderness trained by W. Lakeland. "Went to post at 3:30. At post 5 minutes. Start fair. Won driving; second the same. Tender Crest beat her field away and made the pace very fast while running to the stretch where she commenced to tire, but held on in the gamest possible fashion. Nameoki compelled to squeeze through some narrow places, gamely worked into strong contention when beginning the last furlong, and was wearing the winner down at the end. Agnes Brennan attended the winner closely, but lost ground by turning wide into the stretch Walterin improved her position steadily from a poor start and was pocketed in the stretch but for which she might have landed in the first three. Flagstaff ran a good race and will do better. Wizard was outrun and forced out of his position directly after the start Ishlana has evidently trained off. Luminosity made up ground after going the first quarter Scratched— 39293 Sir Carter, 100. Corrected weights — Luminosity, 106. Tender Crest, show, 8 to 1. Nameoki, show, 2 to 5. Winner— Ch f, by St. Florian— Carline trained by H. C. Riddle. Went to post at 4:00. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Flocarline was lucky at the start, always held her position next to the rail, followed the leader closely and suddenly took a hand in the fight when beginning the last sixteenth, where she passed the apparently sure winner. Mackey Dwyer outstayed him to the finish. The latter got away poorly on the outside and, when compelled to make a wide first turn to get into a contending position, it beat him. Burns was alternately driving and easing up, with a view of beating Rightful and, having him disposed of in the last sixteenth, was unprepared for the winners challenge. Rightful went out to force the pace after the first quarter and ran a remarkably game race. St. Daniel met with sufficient interference on the backstretch to force him out of a good position and was eased up at ■ the end. Fire Eater ran like a sulker, suddenly fell back at the half, although having had no trouble in keeping his position at that point. Miller. Went to post at 4;25. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Ethics was best, and is rounding into his best form. Away badly, and crowded seriouslv . on the first turn, he went after the others on the backstretch, passing one by one and finally finished with a sensational rush. Remorse went the distance unexpectedly well and gave the winner a strong argument at the end. Merito was interfered with on the backstretch but steadily moved up and finished out the last quarter with a rush and was going fastest of all at the end. Kingraine was carried out on the first turn and raced a fast middle half showing in the lead for an instant when the field straightened out for home. Colonsay was a good horse for six and one-half furlongs. Potente had no mishaps and was always at his limit of speed to keep up. Caller is a big and fast horse and for six furlongs easily held the lead and is worth remembering. Scratched— 39296 Ben Howard, 111; 39063 Sambo, 108; 39296 Oclawaha, 103. Ethics, show, 3 to 5. Winner — B. c, by Russell — Nuska trained by P. Wimmer. Went to post at 4:55. At post 3 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second easily Rusk beat the barrier and made the most of his advantage, leading all the way and when challenged at the very end by Grenada, struggled on with extreme gameness and is evi-" dently above the average. Grenada early fell in behind the leading two and at a critical point on the stretch turn seemed beaten, but made good with a sensational rush and lust failed to get up. Hopeful Miss fell away badly in the last furlong, but had forced the winner along very fast for half a mile and nearly beat him. Divination is a beautiful filly thnt kept about the same position throughout the race, but was an easing up fourth and will h« heard of later. Baseful went well throughout. Brooklyn is far from fit and may be a coming good one.
