Safeguard, under a good ride, ran to his best form and was never in trouble at any part of the race. Lord Melbourne appeared a little stiff when going to the post and met with some interference at the first turn, where there was much crowding, but it hardly made any difference in the result. Canyon tired slightly in the last sixteenth. Robbins appeared too light to ride him with the strength he requires. Nimble Nag ran fairly well for six furlongs. Mauser is seemingly of no present account. The winner was bid up to 05 and bought in. Overweights— Jelsi, 1 pound. Safeguard, show, evens. Lord Melbourne, show, 1 to 2. Red Comyn was taken a little ■wide when turning for home, but closed up fast in the final eighth under a powerful ride. He appeared to be unable to extend himself freely in the dead going. Shawana easily wore down Ida Davis in the final eighth and was going away at the end. Ida Davis unseated her jockey by breaking through the barrier and jumped the fence running back of the stables for about a quarter of a mile before being stopped. Taking this into consideration she ran an excellent race. Wreath of Ivy outstayed Determination in the last sixteenth struggle. The latter tired palpably in the closing strides.
