Ascension displayed brilliant form in the going and her race today emphasized the decided improvement in her form over any previous year. From a lucky start she quickly went to the front and easily retained her lead to the finish, being much the best today. Invasion ran a great race and for a furlong held the winner, but was crowded back on the turn, then came again in the stretch and was an easing up second. Brixton, which was badly ridden and bearing out on the turn, raced prominently throughout and at the end was going fast on his own courage. The Musketeer got away poorly and ran an inexplicable race. Mud was formerly his forte and it may be that he has changed in that respect. Baikal showed up well and can do better. Damon and Osgood fell out of contention early. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won driving; second easily. River Pirate stamped himself a wonder in the going under light weight. He was hurried along from the start and forced a phenomenal pace. In fact, no such fast running has ever been recorded, track conditions considered, and yet he sustained it throughout with such pertinacity that the favorite, when called on in the last quarter, could never get to him. Hermis, on which Rice evidently had waiting orders, trailed for six furlongs within striking distance and he was held under a choking pull for six furlongs in spite of the terrific clip, but when called on he failed to make good, although closing up a considerable gap on the winner in the final furlong. He ran with hood and blinkers for the first time in his career. Stamping Ground was lost in the first sixteenth. She finished out gamely and ran an extra good race LaThron clSed at the end with a tremendous rush. Greencrest raced next to the inner rail throughout and was in close quarters. Colonel Bill forced the pace from the start and ran under a pull for nearly seven furlongs, appeared like a sure winner throughout and only failed in the last fifty yards. Herbert was bothered on the first turn after getting away slowly. Odom was at him early to keep up and the hot pace had a tendency to make him sulk. At the end, however, he was wearing the others down and closing strongly. Torchlight maintained a fast and steady pace throughout and was going resolutely at the finish. Injunction had no chance with his incompetent rider and requires vigorous handling. Ink is a good colt, but runs sluggishly and no small jockey can do him justice. He finished like a cyclone. Highlander appeared to sulk following the fast pace and looked fairly beaten at the half, but turning for home, he suddenly raced up next to the inner rail and unexpectedly flashed into view with a good lead a sixteenth out. Setauket got away poorly and was bumped and carried wide on the first turn, then went after the pacemaker too early and vigorously. All these things combined beat him. Locket beat the barrier and made the most of his advantage. He nearly succeeded in making a runaway race of it, but collapsed in the last furlong. Arden was always prominent and tired at the end. Silurian went a good six furlongs. Scratched— 39511 The Regent, 103; 39 5 9 63Scoffer, 97; 39596 Dark Planet, 96 : 396223Cor-uscate, 92; 39543 Ithan, 86. Highlander, show, 1 to 2. Mordella trailed the pacemakers to the stretch and finally wore them down after a lot of hard work on Bullmans part.At the end she came away with great ease. Lida Leib disputed every inch of the last quarter with the winner and ran in greatly improved form. Sir Walt came along at the finish and dropped into third place. Inquisitive Girl got away poorly, displayed a lot of early speed, but failed to stay and evidently disliked the going She is a grand looker and will make good on a fast track.
