Marjoram looks and ran like a crack filly, led unextended throughout and finished easing up. There is room for vast improvement in view of her visible lack of condition. Sweet Tone was favored by the difficult going and was much the best of the others, but only went into prominence right at the end, where she finished with a tremendous rush. The Lady Rohesia was a distant third, just getting up. Ruth Parrish showed quick improvement. Hopeful Miss ran a dull race and was beaten early. Vagary could not run well in the heavy going. The beautifully-bred Fine Fleur, much on the big side and Very green, was practically left. Scratched — Indiscreet, 110. * Marjoram, show, 2J to 1. Sweet Tone, show, 2 to 1. Herbert easily ran past Locket when he was called on in the stretch and was much the best. Locket forced a hot pace for six furlongs and sustained his speed unexpectedly well, the deep mud particularly favoring him. Blackstock, on which Burns rode a waiting race, was always well up and running well in hand when he suddenly fell out of it on the far turn and after that labored awkwardly, but was slowly wearing down Locket at the end. Blackstocks running was peculiar and unsatisfactory and it looked as if he struck himself. Daisy Green stole a good lead on. the first turn and practically forced the pace throughout, coming away unexpectedly well at the erfd. Her race was a remarkable improvement, particularly in stamina. Eugenia Burch, a big two-year-old and the crack filly of last year, has evidently not trained on and is a small three-year-old. She held on gamely at the end and gave evidence of being thoroughly fit, but failed in point of speed and was always under pressure. Dekaber caught Ada Nay tiring and outstayed her for third place. Ada Nay appears an improved filly, but is still on the big side and her lack of condition probably beat her, as she failed in the last furlong, where she seemed like a winner. Stolen Moments was badly ridden, ran out on the first turn, was slipping and sprawling all over the track, ran only in spots and this race is not a. true line on her. Scratched— 38906 Athlana, 111. Won easily; second the same. The Virginian probably owes his victory to Rays patience and superior jockeyshlp. He trailed for the first two miles and appeared a forlorn hope just before he moved up to the leaders, who unexpectedly tired and quit. Almanzor was excessively used in making the pace and held on in the most surprising fashion considering his ill-judged ride. Jim Newman displayed much speed and for half the journey took the fences kindly and well but tiring at the end, blundered frequently In the stretch run* R. B. Sack was apparently going the easiest and safest of all when he fell at the end of a mile and a half. Scratched— 35113 Daffadowndilly, 146; 38110 Duke of Grassland, 146. The Virginian, show, 1 to 4. Luminosity, lucky and superbly ridden, won a lucky victory right at the end, ran a game race and was favored by the going. Excentral came through on the stretch turn into the lead and a poor ride beat her, as she was the best and ran a steady and game race on her own courage. Lady Lavish singled herself out from the field in the last furlong and finished fast. Listaway was badly outrun after the first stride or two and, inadequately handled, made up ground at the end, but was swerving all over the course under Wilker-sons whipping efforts. Rector raced prominently for nearly five furlongs before he succumbed and is reported to be above the average. Jennico failed to stay and was always outrun. Overweights — Sterling Belle, 1 pound. Thistle Heather ran as if she far outclassed her field and came away from the others when straightened for home as if they were anchored. Short Cake was a prominent contender throughout and stood a long stretch drive gamely. Albertola showed speed, but failed to stay. Sir Walt was going well at the end. Lord Haven, a good looker, finished with a rush. Miss Shylock quit in the last quarter Hoceo had no chance with the jockey and finished with plenty in reserve. Winner— Ch. f, by Tristan — Fiona trained by A. D. Prior. Went to* post at 5:10. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won easily; second the same. Florham Queen, quite keyed up today and a superior performer on the grass course, which is at the present time very wet and soggy, made her own pace on the inside, where the footing was best and was not forced along, the favorite and Flying Jib and even Andy Williams all running under a hard pull in behind and all timed their efforts too late, the winner suddenly stealing a long and winning lead when squared for home. Flying Jib was much the best, but suffered from another one of Redferns over-confident and ill-judged rides. Making his move too late and compelled to make the turn on the extreme outside, he closed up with a rush and was fast wearing the winner down at the end. Hermis got away poorly and made a bad first turn, but quickly went up to the leader on the backstretch and kept her close, coming hard held to the stretch, where he fell away unaccountably. Todays showing was the poorest of all his races this year. Andy Williams was outsprinted in the last half and as the race was run had no chance. Florham Queen, show, evens. Flying Jib, show, out.
