Bird Pond showed early speed and swung closely to the rail when entering the stretch and finished out fast and gamely. Tiomaine made up much ground and was closing up fast when Gullett let her swerve across the track and into close quarters behind the winner. She was evidently best. Little Pirate had full advantage of the bad riding in front, was held straight and ran in improved form. Lamont and Coral Leaf are good lookers and will probably do better. Sweet Myrtle showed the most early speed, but lost ground by a wide turn into the stretch. Scratched— 39772 Livy, 100; 39869 Lila Noel, 95. Bird Pond, show, 1 to 2. Tiomaine, show, evens. Cardwellton showed the most speed, finished fast and was vigorously ridden and best. Harry Griffith ran in improved form under judicious handling. Flash of Night was off badly and did not have a chance to use her superior speed. Maverick began slowly but finished resolutely, as usual. Bal Poudre showed speed for a half. Brilliants was given a vigorous ride and a tremendous finish. Weber clearly outrode Kelly in the stretch and the colt under him responded with great gameness. Matt Wadleigh ran his race, but Kelly was overconfident in the stretch and gave him a weak finish. Lord Her-mence ran to his best form and finished pluckily. McGowan went well under a bad ride Arnold K. and Rhyme and Reason were prominent for a half, then tired. Scratched— 398222Ben Adkins, 105. Overweights — Brilliants, 4 pounds; Matt Wadleigh, 2. Maltster laid behind the leaders to the stretch, then came with a magnificent burst of speed on the outside and won in a terrific finish. Frank Bell was probably best. He was in a pocket behind the tiring pacemaker, but had to be taken up and sent around his horses. Poseur disDlaved tremendous speed and was allowed to use it injudiciously. Miss Mae Day tired in the soft going. Lady Strathmore got away badly and failed to run her race Maltster, show, evens. Frank Bell, show, 1 to 3. Poseur, show, 4 to 5.
